A Mother's Plea for Her Daughter's Vision
Don protégé
I want to help my 20-year-old daughter be able to see the world around her like the rest of us can see it. She was born with a genetic condition called Stargardt's Disease, also called Juvenile Macular Degeneration. Unlike age-related macular degeneration, there is no treatment or cure for Stargardt's Disease. Her corrected vision (with glasses or contacts) right now is 20/70. She is able to drive as long as her optometrist signs a document through the DMV for her every year. Her vision without corrective lenses is 20/200. If her vision gets any worse, she will lose her independence. The only hope for her to have better vision is with low vision devices and occupational therapy. Unfortunately, insurance does not pay for most of these services. I am trying to get her into a low vision specialist in Texas (we live in Arkansas). She wants to try a device called eSight-go eyewear with the help of the occupational therapist there. The starting cost of that device is over $5,000. There are other low vision devices that would also help her academically since she is in college now. Plus, they could help her be able to attain and keep a career after college. All the devices are costly. I presently work 3 jobs and still have a hard time making ends meet. She is a wonderful young lady and she deserves the whole world. She is putting herself through college, working full-time, and paying her own way in life right now. I do not want that to change. She can continue to be an independent person and achieve great things if we can get her the assistive devices she needs to excel. One day, she will lose her central vision completely. The doctors can't tell us when. It could be tomorrow or 10 years from now. I want her to be ready and equipped for that. Please help us meet our goal so we can travel to Texas to visit with the low vision specialist and possibly be able to afford these devices for my wonderful girl. Anything you can do will help. If you can't donate, please share the post, and prayers are always much appreciated. Thank you for taking time out of your day for us.
