A Meal & Book for Moonlight Girls in Kenya

Donation protected
Based in Dagoretti Corner, Moonlight Academy is a tin-roofed school providing educational nourishment to some of the most deprived and needy girls in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Here the girls’ elusive dream of attaining a secondary school education is not only brought to life but also realised, through free and subsidized educational arrangements. Because many of the girls come from very impoverished households, Moonlight is also the only place where most of these girls find their daily meal, and when lucky enough a text-book! Like food, books are the source of educational nourishment for young people. They not only enhance instruction by teachers, but also give students the power to read and revise at their own time. For many communities, however, books-like food-are what separates the rich and the poor.

In Kenya, COVID-19’s pandemic lend to schools closure, and many schools were left with no option but to let students go home. While some schools quickly adjusted and even adopted online learning classes, low-cost-private schools like Moonlight found themselves in a crisis of starving students. Many girls reached out to the school seeking food and text-book supplies to enable them continue learning while at home. Low cost private schools do not benefit from government programs, such as subsidised education, food subsidy, and text-books supply. They are schools established by individuals to address the unmet demand for educational opportunities. They are predominantly based in urban low income settings and run into hundreds, providing  education to thousands of primary and secondary school students. Many students, here, can neither afford a three-course meal nor a text-book.

It is because of the above situation that the school’s founder, Mr. Aluda could barely close his eyelids at night as he kept on getting numerous phone calls by girls from his school asking for assistance.  He identified 45 girls who were the neediest in that community and who direly needed our assistance.  For 3 months, (April-June), TAP Africa in collaboration with Dr. Ranjani Somayaji and many other friends, implemented a pilot intervention to provide girls with the most basic necessities to keep them going during lock-down. These included Food supplies, Liquid soap, Sanitary pads, Masks, Leaflets on Covid-smart hygiene, and Books.

Slowly, a new hope began to emerge among the girls and their families. But as days became months in lock-down, more girls faced even a greater risk of starvation, discontinued learning, teenage pregnancies, and potentially dropping out of school.

The situation has not changed since we donated the last package. Schools have not fully reopened and this means a real risk to girls health, well-being, and education.

With your support, TAP Africa wants to extend the reach of a "Meal & Book" initiative to girls in at least 10 schools. Directly, we aim to benefit 1000 girls by transforming the initiative into a self-sustaining project.

How:

Every two weeks, we shall lend text and revision books to 100 students per school, who will contribute K.sh 20 (0.20 dollars) as facilitation fee. This small fee will be pooled together to cover costs for the books, purchase food stuff and sanitary pads for the most vulnerable girls, as well as buy more books.

Already, 5 schools have applied to join the initiative!

Help us buy 3000 second-hand books to enable 1000+ girls learn.
