A Masters Degree in Public Health

Hello Friends!

I have been asked by my Mum to write a few words to explain my journey thus far towards making my dream of achieving a Masters in Public Health come true. She believes that with some support l might be able to create a homemade scholarship created by friends and family to help fund my tuition and living expenses so that I can stay focused and work towards fulfilling my dream of a Masters in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

I am so happy to share with you that I have been accepted to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in their Masters degree in Public Health program. I am excited that I am one step closer to realizing my dream of achieving a Masters Degree in Public Health.

I have dreamt my whole life of helping others that cannot help themselves. I originally returned back to school as a single mother almost 6 years ago, to fulfill prerequisites for nursing school. During one of my nursing prerequisite classes in microbiology, we learned about epidemiology and how children are dying daily of diarrhea. This was when my academic life changed. I began feeling anxious with my newly attained knowledge that children in half of the world were actually dying daily of water borne diseases and diarrhea. I knew that my calling was no longer that of a comfortable salary attained in a labor and delivery room in an elite white hospital. Slowly finding balance in my daily life as a single mother, I slowly finished my pre requisites and then transferred to the University of Santa Cruz to continue with a BA program instead of nursing.

After going back to school and during my time at UCSC I dove deeper into understanding water and sanitation justice on a global scale, and the facts are not something I can pretend only live in books and documentaries… On average 2,195 children die daily from diarrhea, and water borne diseases such as Cholera, which can be eradicated with a clean water system…There are women and children being raped and assaulted daily and nightly, while trying to relieve themselves in dangerous, filthy, unlit, public toilets, and children have died by falling into pit latrines; all due to a lack of safe, sustainable sanitation systems…2.5 billion people live without adequate sanitation systems. I have always had a private tap that when I turn it on clean running water comes out, and when my child is sick I too can give her clean water and medicine. I have never once been terrified for my life and safety to go to the toilet as predators linger in the night… My heart hurts every time I think of these realities and I continue to dream of making life a little safer for people more vulnerable than myself.

My goal now is to elevate my academic achievements so that I can open up career opportunities, in order to help improve living for the most vulnerable populations. Public Health has a wonderfully huge scope of practice and I would like to work towards improving water and sanitation services.

This summer I completed a Bachelors degree in Community Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz, and applied to my dream school…The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, with out a real understanding of how much it would cost, and was unaware of the lack of scholarships available for me to apply for at the school. At that point, I still I only dreamed of a Masters in Public Health, and now, I have been accepted to one of the top schools in Public Health in the world!

I am on my way to helping people in their most desolate, desperate time and I hope that I can do work that lets them see the beauty of a sunset or a sunrise again as their vision is no longer blocked by that of survival. I hope to work together with them so that they too will be able to fulfill their dreams of providing a safe life for their children, not just enough to barely survive, but with all that they need to enjoy in this life.

I had only dreamed of a Masters in Public Health, and now, I have been accepted to one of the top schools in Public Health in the world, and with your generosity, I am ready!
