A gift that transcends borders

We are celebrating Ahrav's 2nd birthday on 21 October! Be part of the celebrations by giving to EMpower.

Neelam and Rohit have selected EMpower to be the preferred non-profit for giving on this special occasion. They recently became aware of EMpower and its mission to support at-risk young people in India and 14 other emerging market countries around the globe. More about EMpower here: www.empowerweb.org

Of the 100 grantee partners that EMpower works with, Neelam and Rohit have nominated Akshara to receive this gift.

Why Akshara?

Akshara falls under EMpower's livelihood portfolio. Akshara enables young women to acquire technical, employability and leadership skills to become competitive in the formal workforce. This is critical because unemployment among youth due to lack of skills and poverty is a long-term challenge for India. Particularly so for the urban poor in Mumbai (Maharashtra State). The young women living in slums are deprived of post-secondary school education due to the lack of availability of vocational/skills education and socio-economic barriers which restrict their educational opportunities.

What can you do?

- USD 103 enables 1 young woman to receive individualized mentor support for career planning and job placement

- USD 212 supports 2 young women to undergo training on computer skills, financial literacy, goal setting and job preparedness workshops.

- USD 504 supports 12 young women to gain foundation life skills to be successful in negotiating their careers, mobility and family life. They will participate in the Girl Path exercise to improve their articulation of career aspirations, ability to identify and address gender-based violence (GBV) and discrimination in occupational and domestic setting.

"We believe that teaching our children the value of privilege comes with a sense of responsibility for society at large. Through the birthday celebrations we hope to create a positive social impact and be reminded of all that we are blessed with. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to support such a meaningful cause. "
