A future for young people in Spiti Valley

Donation protected
What is our plan?
Over the next three years, we want to enable Serkong School to develop towards more sustainable operations, whilst providing young people from the Spiti area with the inspiration they need to shape their future.

A number of initiatives have been started already: from employing a new school principle to revisiting the strategy and teaching methods, from equipping the library to setting up a new music room and providing sports gear, and so much more.

For the next step towards more sustainable operations, however, the school needs support. We are looking for funding

1.     to provide adequate food for the students, teachers and staff members of the school – in order to give them a healthy future and

2.     to adjust the teacher’s and staff’s salaries to a certain extent in 2021 – right now, they are well below the level of comparable salaries at a government-run school; and to employ a computer education teacher – to give the students instruction in the field of digitisation.

What is it all about?
Serkong School is a private school in Tabo in the northern Indian Himalayan region, which currently provides teaching to 250 students from kindergarten age to 10th grade (from five years of age to 16 years of age). In addition, the school helps students prepare for further education in Dharamsala.

The school was founded by Tabo Monastery in 1999, to offer young people from the lower Spiti Valley a modern education, on the basis of which they can shape their own futures. The school especially supports children and young people from poorer families. Many students live in the school’s dormitory buildings.

Serkong School receives a grant from the Indian government and also benefits from private donations. However, the money available is currently far from sufficient to hire all the teachers needed, to pay teachers' salaries on a level with the salaries in state schools and to provide healthy food. Moreover, the school’s buildings urgently need regular maintenance in order to maintain them over the long term.

Therefore, we want to build up funds for the next one to two years to ensure the students’ healthy nutrition, to adjust the teacher’s and staff’s salaries to a certain extent in 2021 (right now, they are employed at only 30-50 percent of a comparable salary at a government-run school) and to employ a much-needed computer education teacher.

· For healthy food we need per month an additional amount of 1,500 euros
· For the increase in salaries and a computer education teacher we need per month 5,500 euros

Who are we?
The charitable non-profit association Serkong Tsenshap International e.V. was founded in Berlin (Germany) to support Tabo Monastery and the associated Serkong School. We work very closely with our Tibetan partners in India, with whom we jointly develop all our plans, activities and projects.

For more information on the Monastery and Serkong School, please visit the website of Tabo Monastery .

How do we use the funds?
All funds raised through this crowdfunding effort, with the exception of the bank transfer and the payment processing fees of the crowdfunding platform gofundme, will be used for the above-mentioned purposes.
