My name is Billy and I am raising money for the Brighton PDSA in memory of my beloved dog Mace.

I am going to light up the sky with balloons in Memory of Mace Kent (11/09/05- 18/09/18) on his birthday 11th September 2019 to raise money for Brighton PDSA. The event will take place at Duke’s Mound- feel free to come and join us. Because of the cause being for animals, we are making sure that all of the balloons are biodegradable and animal friendly.

Throughout my life, I was never a lover of dogs. Back in 2005, I met a 4 week old puppy who  was living in very poor conditions. I was asked to meet these litter of puppies, and when I did I bent down on my knees and one special puppy came over to me and put his head on my knee. Little did I know, that I was going to fall in love with him, took him home and we called him Mace. Due to him only being 4 weeks old, we were advised by the local vets to bottle feed him and give him fresh food such as chicken and beef mince- which he loved! A few months on, when he started teething, it was clear that he was in pain, so to help relieve this, we fed him ice cream of of a spoon.

In 2006, my daughter left the door open allowing Mace to get out of the house, and Mace had gone missing. For 3 long days, I did all it took to get my Mace back, and he was finally found 8 miles away from home, and had been taken to battersea dogs and and home. Mace was so excited to see us, and he had unfortunately had a traumatic few days due to some vile men. I was over the moon when Mace was eventually able to come home with me.

In 2009, my family and I moved from London to Brighton, where we had 9 wonderful years with Mace, where he loved being in places such as Duke’s Mound, Stammer Park, Devil’s Dyke and Preston Park.

Unfortunately, in 2018, Mace became unwell, and had not been eating which was very unlike him, so we took him to our local vet- Acorn Vets, Hove- where they explained that Mace had an infection and gave him a course of steroids. When his test results were returned a few days later, and when I mentioned that Mace’s condition had not improved, I was advised to continue Mace’s treatment and monitor his condition.  Because Mace had not yet improved, I was advised by a friend to take him to Brighton PDSA. There, they ran some tests and sadly informed me that Mace has cancer of the liver, and advised me it might be time to say my goodbyes to him. At that time, I was not ready to say goodbye, so they gave Mace more steriods to keep him going. Two days later, we decided it was time to say goodbye, but as a last attempt to get him up, I offered him something to eat. After not eating for 9 days, Mace managed to eat all of his food, was looking for more, so we even took him to McDonald’s for a double cheeseburger as a treat. The following day, I took Mace back to the PDSA, and advised them that I was taking him to the specialist North Down vets in Bletchingley.

I arranged an appointment at the the specialist vet (which was a £250 consultation appointment), and very quickly got me an appointment for 11th September. Through talking to the specialists there, it was determined that Mace was going to have blood tests and a biopsy taken, and among many other tests, he was there for 4 hours. When we went to collect him, I was overwhelmed when I was told that through their experience, Mace did not have cancer, and could just do with losing a little bit of weight. Due to this, I was so angry with the PDSA, as I felt I had been lied to. Although they explained that steroids can often cover up cancer.

The next day, Mace started experiencing nose bleeds, so I called the Northdown specialist vets who informed me that this may be a side effect of having tubes up his nose, and that there would be nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, the PDSA were still convinced that Mace was still very unwell. A few days had passed, and Mace tragically has a nosebleed that lasted for many hours. We decided to give the PDSA a call, who advised us that the best thing to do would be to put Mace to sleep. Although it broke our hearts, we knew it was best for him that we took him, and tragically said our last goodbye to Mace on 18th September at 01:21am, a week after his 13th birthday.

To give back to the amazing PDSA, and in loving memory of Mace, I am going to release a balloon for every week of his life- totalling at 677. I would be eternally grateful if you would sponsor a balloon, or two (or a few!) or as many as you want, to give back to the PDSA for all of their support over such a devastating time.
