A Father’s Walk

Last time I rowed for 24 hours straight on a concept 2 rower. This time, I’m carrying Jack up Mount Everest. I will be walking up and down a local hill at “The Farm” in Killelea National Park 216 times, while wearing a 35kg weighted vest. This will equate to 8849m of elevation, the elevation of Mount Everest. Total distance covered will be 216km. The 35kg vest represents Jack. This will take me over 48 hours, which I plan to spread across 3-4 days. Along the way I want to spread awareness and raise funds for this horrible condition.

MD has no cure, a race against time to find one to ensure our boys get to live a long and happy life. The life expectancy is mid 20s, wheelchair bound by late primary school. It’s a muscle wastage condition where the tissue doesn’t have the ability to recover. Over time, the muscles responsible for breathing lack strength and fail resulting in the cruel reality. Jack was diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 2.

My goal is to raise $20,000 for MD NSW. They contribute to adventures and events for families and fund much needed research to help treat and hopefully one day find that cure. If MD was Covid, we’d have a cure by now, but unfortunately not enough people know about it. I didn’t before Jack was diagnosed. It effects 1 in every 3600 boys, extremely rare in women, so more common then we realise.
