After a two-year hiatus, The Three Ships Collective, with the support of Soup Can Theatre, is remounting our site-specific and award-winning smash-hit adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and we need your help to make it happen!

ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION

The Three Ships Collective’s A Christmas Carol is an original and immersive theatrical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story, set in the historic Campbell House Museum located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Written by Justin Haigh, directed by Sare Thorpe, and with musical direction by Pratik Gandhi, this production invites audience members to step into the world of Victorian London and follow flinty miser Ebenezer Scrooge on his ghostly journey of redemption.

After back-to-back sold out runs in 2018 and 2019, A Christmas Carol has received rave reviews from both the press and public alike. The production was recognized at the 2018 My Entertainment World Awards, with lead actor Thomas Gough winning for ‘Outstanding Leading Performance in a Play (Independent)’, and director Sarah Thorpe nominated for ‘Outstanding Direction’ (Independent)’.

Our adaptation includes new scenes, characters, historic details, and narrative twists that do not exist in Dickens’ version, as well as songs and musical elements written specifically for this production. Our fresh take on this classic tale allows us to evoke contemporary issues and themes of social justice through the lens of the past, as well as to emphasize the universal, secular, and humanist themes of the story, making it appropriate and enjoyable holiday fare for Torontonians of all backgrounds.

WHY SUPPORT THIS PRODUCTION?

After being dark for two years due to the pandemic, we are delighted to be able to return to the Campbell House Museum and present A Christmas Carol in all its splendour. Having said that, this return has been especially challenging given the ongoing roadblocks and significant financial setbacks that the theatre industry continues to face as a result of Covid-19. By supporting this year’s production, it enables our Collective to:

1. Present the highest quality of work possible while also ensuring that our tickets remain fairly priced and accessible to patrons of diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

2. Compensate the artists that make up our collective for their effort and involvement.

3. Take extra safety precautions and measures for the benefit of both our patrons and artists.

4. Bring a little joy into an otherwise bleak year.

While we are fortunate to have enthusiastic audiences, ticket sales alone are not enough; the site-specific nature of the Campbell House means that our audience capacity is quite intimate compared to a traditional theatrical venue and limits our potential sales revenue - even with sold-out performances. Furthermore, we produce this show without the assistance of any major financial sponsors, governmental organizations, granting bodies, or other similar funding on which larger theatre organizations can rely.

The necessary expenses associated with this ambitious presentation are, however, no less significant than a traditional theatrical production and include:

· Venue and Rehearsal Space Rentals

· Period-Appropriate Costumes and Props

· High-Quality Masks and PPE

· Production Insurance and other Administrative Costs

· Photography and Videography

· Advertising and Publicity

· and more too numerous to list here.

We also plan to honour A Christmas Carol’s key tenets of charity and giving by holding a sock drive in conjunction with registered charity, Socks4Souls. Socks are the most needed but least donated clothing item in homeless shelters; we will encourage all ticket holders to bring a new pair of socks for us to collect on behalf of Socks4Souls, who will distribute them to local shelters.

ABOUT THE THREE SHIPS COLLECTIVE AND SOUP CAN THEATRE

The Three Ships Collective was originally formed in 2018 for the purpose of creating and staging this production of A Christmas Carol. It is comprised of accomplished and critically-acclaimed theatre artists whose accolades include, among others, multiple Dora, Canadian Comedy, and My Entertainment World Awards and nominations. You may also see them on screen in notable film and TV productions, including Murdoch Mysteries, The Boys, The Expanse, The Umbrella Academy, Reign, Kim’s Convenience, and Anne with an E.

Soup Can Theatre is a Toronto-based company that explores and comments on contemporary issues and societal challenges, offering audiences a theatrical experience that is both entertaining and enriching.
