I decided to start this fund because I genuinely need help purchasing a new set of orthodics, aka leg braces or AFOs. As a disabled person who has always worked, I have experienced the spectrum of full-to-no coverage over the years. Currently, I have health coverage through the public hospital system, and incur minimal co-pays for general and specialists' visits. Additional coverage through Medicaid is not possible because my PART TIME job pays me too much money, but not enough to cover NYS marketplace coverage, so I'm in limbo. 

The doctors' visits and recommendations leading up to this point have been covered by the hospital, but the vendor making the braces and orthopedic shoes, is offsite, and therefore, an out of pocket expense. Based on the proposed payment plan, it will take me just short of a year to pay for the braces. 

I don't like asking for money, and when I have, I have attempted to pay it back, unless it was given as a gift. I have put off getting a new pair of braces because of the expense and the stress related to coming up with the money. They are old, worn, uncomfortable, and painful. As a result, I only wear them when absolutely necessary (ie, the photo posted with this campaign), for traveling or visiting homes with stairs. I want to increase my physical activity, and braces that fit correctly and comfortably, will go a long way in making that possible. 

I went for the fitting on Monday, June 26th, and will have a printed bill in a few weeks, which I will post. I was quoted a cost of $2296, for 1 full set of braces and 1 pair of shoes. I'm also considering a second pair of shoes, but orthodic inserts must be included, which brings up the total price. All told, I will receive the braces by the end of July.
