A Bassoon to Last a Lifetime

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Welcome to my campaign which will allow me to further pursue my passion for music. My name is Aric and I discovered the bassoon as a freshman in high school when I realized I wanted to play in a professional symphony orchestra. Since that time, I have fallen in love with the instrument and it has become the key to unlocking my musical future. I currently am a sophomore at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and, you guessed it, I am majoring in Bassoon performance. In high school and in college up to this point, I have been fortunate enough to use an instrument provided by the school.

On the bassoon, I started as a beginner who had never played on a double reed to being awarded a gold ranking with my high school’s woodwind quintet from California’s Music Educators Association. On the bassoon, I auditioned for six colleges and conservatories including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and I was accepted to five of these prestigious institutions. On the bassoon, I traveled with my university’s orchestra to play Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 for the local people of Bainbridge, Washington. On the bassoon, I won my school’s Concerto/Aria Competition this past fall, an honor that I am truly humbled to receive.

I have reached the point in my studies where I have outgrown the current bassoon that my school provides me. It is now time for me to invest in my future by purchasing the first bassoon that I can call my own.

The bassoon is a unique instrument that requires a high level of finesse and control from the musician to create its inherent rich and resonant sound. That is why a bassoonist is a rarity when compared to other musicians who play in a symphony. Because of its intricacies in sound and design, the bassoon is carefully hand-made, never manufactured, thus making it one of the most expensive instruments on the market.

When ordering a new custom bassoon, there can be up to a two year waiting period. Therefore, it is paramount that I place an order for one in the next few months so that it can arrive in time for my grad school auditions that will be taking place in spring of 2020. However, I am also pursuing options for purchasing a high-quality, used bassoon, but these are also fairly expensive.

This is why I am reaching out to invite you to invest in not only my instrument, but my future musical career. Thank you in advance for your support in making it possible for me to continue on this journey of music making, bassoon style!
