Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you had an amazing Christmas season with your love ones! If you did not know, I am now entering my forth semester at North Carolina State University. I have had an amazing year and half at college and it is still hard to believe that I have made it this far! I am loving school and I am looking forward to continuing to studying criminology and also psychology for the next couple years.

For three years, I have had the amazing opportunity to spend a week each spring serving in Haiti. Haiti has two national languages, Creole and French, and on my most recent trip to Haiti, I decided that I wanted to become fluent in French. During the trip, I desperately wanted to effectively communicate with the Haitians. I longed to hear stories about how the Lord had changed their lives and I wanted understand the struggles they continually endured on a daily basis. I am looking forward to the day when I can share my faith with my Haitian friends using their own language. Learning French will take me one step closer to that vision. I have taken two semesters of French so far, however being immersed in a culture is crucial to being able to understand and speak a language fluently, which is why I want to dedicate some time to living in France during the summer.

I have been interested in studying abroad for a long time and after a year of searching for a program that would work for me and my degree I have finally found one! I was hoping to do a semester study abroad, but in order to graduate on time I have decided to apply for a shortened summer program. The French Language and Culture in Lille and Paris study abroad program is a five week program which starts off with a week tour of Paris, Normandy, and other incredible sights throughout France. The last four weeks us students will be studying at the Université Catholique de Lille in Lille, France taking a French course in the morning and an elective course in the afternoon. The elective courses I am interested in taking are PS 341: European Politics or FL 216: Art and Society in France. I am really excited about this opportunity and I cannot wait to experience another new culture!

Although summer study abroad trips are less expensive than semester programs, they are also harder to pay for because they are not during the regular school year. Since my financial aid and reoccurring scholarships are only available to me during the school year, I am tasked with the challenge of having to find other means of funding. I am working part-time, applying for scholarships, and keeping a change jar to help cover the costs, but with the deadline quickly approaching in April, I could really use the help of my friends and family as well.

Here is the breakdown of my financial situation:

Program Fee $5,900

Estimated Airfare $1,600

Spending Money/Other Costs Not Included in Program Fee $1000

Total Cost $8,500

I have $1,000 and my $350 application fee already set aside leaving 7,150 left for me to raise for the trip. It is a large amount to raise but I know that with hard work and faith, it can be done. Any help that you or your family can provide whether it is in the form of finances, frequent flyer miles, or loose change is greatly appreciated! I will be maintaining a blog throughout the trip so you and your family can keep up with the many adventures I will be facing soon. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter and I am praying for your family as we continue with the new year.

Au Revoir!
