Hello. My name is Cristiane Machado, and I am a co-creator and believer in the power of community!
I am launching this fundraiser to raise enough money to REGISTER our charitable organization as a 501c3 nonprofit for mental wellness. I want to bring awareness to the chaotic situation of mental disorder care and to the way our society is suffering because of the lack of financial and professional support in the area of mental health. #YogaLoka is the name of the organization, which will support NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) and other organizations interested in creating alternative ways to treat and prevent mental disorders. Starting by bringing yoga and meditation into psychiatric institutions, #YogaLoka intends to grow, support, and bring Alternative Medicine into other psychiatric facilities, halfway houses, and homeless shelters.
As soon as funds are available, we, the Board of Directors of #YogaLoka—Dr. Vonetta Dotson, Assistant Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida; Liz Getman, Nonprofit Advisor and Grant Writer; Jessica Antiga, our treasurer, who has battled her mother’s mental illness; William Hawkins, our secretary, who has experience counseling those in 12 step programs; and myself—intend to REGISTER the organization as a 501c3 nonprofit, create our website, and print our t-shirts, which are designed to bring awareness to the cause.
It is my DREAM to bring light to such a stigmatized issue in our society. We are killing each other because our minds are so disturbed by the “voices.” Let’s learn HOW to deal with those voices—not by numbing them, but by listening to them. My older brother is a manic depressive and schizophrenic, and he is “lost” somewhere in Brasil. If I can HELP at least ONE person to come out of that torment, I will feel it was all worth it.
I am GRATEFUL for the opportunity to be part of the solution instead of the demise of the human race.
