Alex is a survivor! He had been a normal college student working towards a degree
in criminal justice. With almost no warning, Alex was diagnosed with
Wilson's Disease, a very rare condition that is difficult to diagnose.
Alex's liver does not produce enough ceruloplasmin, which removes excess
copper from the human body. This is taken in through many sources,
including drinking water and even chocolate. The excess copper has
caused brain damage and limitations in body function- basically, Alex's cognitive functions are intact and he is fully aware and intelligent, but he can no
longer control the movement of his muscles to stand, speak, or walk as he has severe dystonia causing abnormal posturing and stiffness. Alex is only 24, but his body has betrayed him :(
Alex recently underwent a spinal fusion surgery to realign his spine and regain balance, and therefore, his future chances for walking again. Unfortunately, this surgery left him paralyzed from the waist down. Thanks to our many friends and family we have raised money on this site to make a down-payment on a used wheelchair van! Plus we were able to purchase a standing frame to get Alex on his feet to prevent muscle atrophy and regain strength he has lost. He has already been diagnosed with osteopenia and physical therapy and weight bearing exercise will help to stabilize or reverse that.
Recently, Alex has begun to move his leg again!! Our hopes are that he will walk even a few steps again. We had him in a pool during a recent vacation and noticed how well he could kick and make walking motions when upright. He could push away from the wall with only the left leg, but the right leg is TRYING!
We have got to get him in a pool for water therapy!
His medical insurance has denied him for further therapy, saying they cannot document further improvement. However, we KNOW he can and will improve given enough time and therapy!
We are hoping you will help us out! Any amount helps, and we are so grateful to have the support and kindness from people like you! Amazingly, through all of the hospital bills, surgeries, doctors visits- and having to live in skilled nursing facilities instead of at home- Alex and his entire family have remained positive and hopeful!
