Send the Wharf Rats to Worlds!

The Wharf Rats are a FIRST LEGO League robotics team from the Magellan Charter School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The team has been selected to represent North Carolina at the FIRST World Festival in Houston, Texas. The FIRST World Festival is the pinnacle of robotics competitions with teams from 46 countries and an expected attendance of over 30,000 people. Our team will be interacting with the best and brightest from around globe!

But the team needs your help to make this trip possible! Any amount you can contribute will help them get to Houston, so please consider donating to help make this phenomenal opportunity a reality and get these kids to the World Festival!

Who Are We

We are Zack, Connor M., Enoch, Connor B., Alexander, Matthew and Henry and we are the Wharf Rats!  We are in grades 6 through 8 at Magellan Charter School and collectively have had 23 years of experience in FLL.

What is FLL

FIRST LEGO League is a program for children ages 9 to 14 that encourages STEM learning, critical thinking and teambuilding skills through a Robotic Performance competition, Core Values challenge and Research Project. Each year FLL releases a unique challenge and teams from all over the world work to build and program an autonomous robot to perform specific missions to earn points as well as design an innovative solution to a real world problem based on that theme. This year’s FLL theme is Hydrodynamics!

Our Story

The Wharf Rats started last June designing their robot to prepare for the challenge release last August. Practicing 3 to 5 days a week, the team has put countless hours into building and programming their robot, meeting with hydrodynamics professionals, and researching their project topic.

Their hard work paid off.  At the North Carolina FLL State Championship the Wharf Rats received 1st Place Robot Performance and 1st Place Grand Champions earning them a bid to the FIRST World Festival!  Additionally, in recognition of the quality of their challenge solution, a product addressing sediment contamination in stormwater runoff, they were invited to submit their research project for consideration for the FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award!

One of the team’s favorite aspects of FLL is mentoring younger teams through in person interactions and sharing their robot missions on their YouTube channel. They have enjoyed answering questions and reading comments from teams around the world and look forward to meeting some of them in Houston!  Check out their winning robot run from states as well as their other videos:
