We Don't Talk About That -The Book

I am Robin Divine and I am an author. I am currently working on a book project that will be a collection of stories from Black women and will share their experiences with sexual abuse, self-injury and mental illness. The idea for this project came to me a few months ago after I began therapy for a low grade depression. My therapist began to show me how the sexual abuse I had experienced and hidden as a child was still impacting my adult life. As I started to share my story with others, I was horrified and saddened by how many could relate to my own experience.
Sexual abuse is a topic that is often not talked about. In the Black community it is even more silenced. As a result of my own abuse, I dealt with self-injury and mental illness in my teenaged years. I quickly learned that these were also issues that could not be openly discussed.
One thing I now know is that healing never happens in silence and many of us have been silent for too long. The impact has been devastating, individually and to our community.
Shortly after I put the call out for interviews, my inbox was flooded with women that wanted to share, many for the first time. This is how I know that it's time for this book to be written. Women are ready to talk.
There is an immediate need for funding for this project as I already have numerous requests from women to come interview them. I desire for the interviews to be conducted in person due to the sensitive nature of the subject. I want to be able to physically hold space as they share. To date, I have conducted 12 interviews and there are over 40 more that are ready to be scheduled with a waitlist of even more women who want to have their story told.
When you donate to this project, you are supporting women in sharing their unspoken stories, healing the shame of childhood sexual abuse and breaking the silence that has plagued our homes and families for much of our history. The conversations that we choose to have (or not have) around childhood sexual abuse now willl have a direct impact on the experiences of our next generation of children.
