Culture & College: New York to Indiana

As a middle school teacher and coach, I am constantly thinking of ways to introduce my students to new experiences and to become college and career ready. I teach some brilliant kids, both on and off the basketball court. Unfortunately many have never even visited a college, and some of them have never even traveled outside of NYC.
This season we are planning to take a trip to Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana to participate in a national basketball tournament. This trip will give kids a first hand look at the college athletic experience. Going to college is a dream that all of our kids have and I want to give them a chance to see what that dream looks like close up!

The tournament is attended by athletes from nearly all 50 states. As part of this trip, we will also schedule a tour of a local college. Students will be able to see the campus, classrooms, recreation centers and student housing facilities. This experience will motivate West Prep Scholar Athletes to understand that college is a reality that is at their fingertips.
