Detroit Dreamer: The Art Connection

My name is Veniece Session, I am a Senior at the University of Michigan from Detroit, MI. I was granted the opportunity to be a part of an amazing two-part endeavor facilitated by Professor Larry Grant: a class in Ann Arbor, and an on-site immersion experience in Amsterdam and Berlin.
In class, we analyze policies regarding social welfare, human rights, and social justice. We examine how American, Dutch, and German policies differ, and the individual impact they create for their respective members. In particular, we focus on juvenile justice, human sex trafficking and art based community development in the European urban cities of Berlin and Amsterdam.
We then apply our knowledge through our travels, and I will specifically be focusing on the art based community development aspect. In Amsterdam we will be working with hotmamahot, which is a creative community collective that supports a range of activities from a radio show to food catering. While in Berlin, we will partner with Gangway, a music centered initiative that uses hip hop to bridge cultural differences and create community.
I look forward to being able to learn through this experience and grow in my knowledge of the global art scene, as well as build community across the world. As a graduate from Cass Technical High School and a student of the University of Michigan, I hope to act as an ambassador and spread the positive and enriching knowledge of Detroit and Ann Arbor.
After graduating from the University of Michigan I aspire to work in the city of Detroit with various artists and talents and help ensure a platform for the many voices within the arts. As a Production Manager, Art Curator, and Creator I am eager to bring the full spectrum of the arts to the forefront of the Motor City’s renaissance.
