Univ. of Montana Pacific Islanders Club Fundraiser

Aloha mai kākou,

We are the University of Montana Pacific Islanders Club (Click for Facebook page .) Our goal is to foster an ʻohana (click for video ) here in Montana, while perpetuating our Pacific Islander cultures. The club was established in 2017 with the purpose of creating a sacred space for Pacific Islanders, continuing cultural practices, and providing awareness and resources about our Pacific Islands.

In the last four years, we have hosted very successful hula classes which are free and open to students and campus community members. These hula classes serve as practice for our end-of-the-year lūʻau fundraising event.  We have also fundraised by working concession stands for UM basketball, volleyball, football, and special concert events. In conjunction with these fundraisers, we have also held very successful bake sales which generate funds to pay for programming and events throughout the year. However, due to COVID-19 we have not been able to do such fundraising events.

Although COVID-19 has altered the way activities are held, we have not stopped seeking student engagement during the entire pandemic. In fact, we were able to keep our momentum going through 14 outdoor summer hula classes, 12 virtual hula classes, 6 in-person hula classes, and 12 virtual "Aloha Friday" live shows on Instagram and Facebook. We created our COVID-19 mitigation team to ensure everyone participating were safe and healthy.

We are spreading Aloha near and far through our hula classes, workshops, community outreach (click for video ) and more. Our objective is "Mālama Kekahi I Kekahi" which means to take care of one another. In this past year of uncertainty, it was of utmost importance that we stayed resilient while creating purpose and belonging. With your generosity, we will be able to continue perpetuating, practicing, and sharing the gift of Aloha throughout our university, community, and to everyone around the world.

Mahalo!
