Tom's Road to Recovery

On December 19, 2017 I took my husband, Tom Sadzeck to the emergency room with symptoms of a headache, left sided weakness and tremors. Within 24 hours he was in a coma. The medical team diagnosed him with meningitis and encephalitis of unknown cause. For five terrifying days he was on life support and on Christmas morning our miracle came true and he opened his eyes.
For the next several days he continued to have seizures and was unable to manage fully coherent conversations or simple tasks but each day showed glimmers of progress. Seeing a man so strong and full of life not be able to sit up, walk or make any sense was terrifying but Tom's strength and resolve persisted and on January 10th the doctors believed he was ready to move to acute rehab. Over the next month he regained all mobility, could carry on a conversation and could feed and bathe himself. We were overjoyed to see Tom's personality and sense of humor were still intact even if there was still a long road to recovery ahead.
Tom has been home since early February but the work continues. Though the frequency has lessened, Tom's seizures persist and the PTSD and anxiety, while improving, makes the recovery slower than he would like. His brain has a hard time with increased stimuli, problem solving or organizational tasks. Despite all of this, Tom continues to have a positive attitude and believes he has truly been given a second chance at life. His gratitude is reflected daily in his work towards full recovery.
As the seizures can happen without notice, we must have someone with Tom at all times which makes it challenging to balance work and home care. We are so thankful that Tom is healing but right now he is not able to work and I am only able to work part time so I can be available to him and the kids.
His medical care was excellent but our deductibles and uncovered expenses, plus loss of wages is starting to hit us hard. We are so grateful for any support and all donations will go to cover these expenses and to ensure he will continue to have the best medical care possible.
