Tom DeCarli, a husband of 36 years, father of 2, and grandfather of 2 wonderful boys needs your help and financial support. As many of you may know Tom has been in the hardest fight of his life. With no warning and only minor symptoms, he was surprised when diagnosed with kidney cancer in April of 2015. The cancer had already consumed most of his kidney and due to the size of his tumor, he was quickly set-up for a full nephrectomy (kidney removal). After surgery, he was told that he was cancer free and he was released. Doctors asked him to return every 6 months for scans. Feeling uneasy his wife encouraged him to obtain a scan early. Unfortunately, that scan showed that the cancer had returned in two of his lymph nodes.
Since then, he has been on many medications and trials with UC Davis. The first medication and trial did not stop the cancer, rather it caused a severe pain reaction that ended up placing him in the hospital for a number of days. Then he tried another medication and was fortunate enough to have it control the spread of the cancer for 16 months. Life seemed fairly normal during this time and the side effects were manageable. However, cancer is cunning and eventually became resistant to this medication allowing the cancer to spread once again. This time it went to the liver. Tom had radiation therapy directed to this spot on the liver. The doctors believed the treatment was successful. Then the doctors found the two previous cancerous lymph nodes were now followed by a third one. The tissue where the kidney was previously located is starting to look suspicious on the CT scan also. Stage four cancer is a persistent beast and is always on the move. Tom has been resilient and the fight goes on. He is now preparing for another round of 15-20 days of radiation treatment on these lymph nodes and surrounding tissue. After that a search for a new medication will begin. The doctors never know which drug will work and for how long. It is a matter of trial, error and re-adjustment of medications. All that doctors can offer is the hope of more time.
Even though he has kept working as often as he can to help bear the burden of the cost, his ability to do so cannot last. Although his attitude and positive outlook have helped him fight this battle, he finds his energy and stamina waning.
The financial burden of cancer treatments, and medications, let alone the physical and emotional strain are over whelming. His current medical expenses are already well beyond his ability to cover and there are many more yet to come.
