Give Tim Shrift a Hand!

Donation protected
We are a group of friends who want to help our friends, Tim Shrift and his family, with their personal struggle related to covering family medical related expenses. These expenses are related to Tim's May 2015 accident that kept him months in the hospital two hours from home as well as continuing physical therapy, treatments, further surgeries, tests, appointments, and prosthetic arm fittings requiring many, many trips back to Grand Rapids.

For those who may not know the extent of Tim's injuries, he broke both of his legs (Both above and below the knees) tore (Or lost) ligaments and tendons in both knees, lost large areas of skin on his legs requiring grafts from other parts of his body, broke his left arm in several locations, lost his right arm above the elbow, fractured his pelvis, fractured ribs, and fractured three spinal vertebrae. I think that is the complete list. Basically everything but his main organs and head were injured.  He has had several dozen surgeries, skin grafts, cadaver ligament grafts, and hours and hours of painful PT. But in typical Tim fashion - he kept his sense of humor through the whole thing.

Tim went back to work (Perhaps too soon) in January 2016 as a 2/3 time teacher rather than in his former position as principal. He spent his breaks and lunch periods in the locker room with his legs up with ice packs on them. He taught class even though he was in excruciating pain.

Tim's family has medical insurance, but as those who have dealt with serious medical issues understand, the insurance coverage requires annual deductibles, co-pays, and many related expenses that are not covered by insurance. These ongoing costs and bills are becoming a hinderance to Tim's efforts in recovery.

Tim is being fitted for a prosthetic arm, which has required many trips already, and will require many more for further fittings, adjustments, plus physical therapy and training on how to get it to work properly with what remains of his real arm. Tim also has an ongoing physical therapy regime, medical appointments, prescription expenses, travel, and time off of work for him and his wife.

Tim is a very proud and determined man. He has been inspirational to many who have seen him slog through the daily painful physical and emotional battle these injuries have put in front of him.

A group  of us have been trying to get Tim to agree to setting up a GoFundMe account for his family since shortly after his accident. Tim has been determined to do this on his own.

But he has realized that the stresses of this are affecting his family's quality of life, as well affecting his ability to stay positive through all of his medical issues.

The $15,000 goal is what we think are the expenses not covered by medical insurance, and other related expenses that have been incurred so far related to Tim's new prosthetic arm.

Hence the the name of this effort, "Give Tim a Hand".
