This is Rugby: a book about American rugby culture

If you ask the average American what they know about the game of rugby, they will likely mention the stereotypes - violent, alcohol-fueled, meatheads, etc. What most don't know about rugby is its inclusivity, diversity, culture of camaraderie, and openness to every shape and size.

 

My name is Adam Hughes and I'm a writer and (very) amateur rugby player and coach. I'm writing the story of American rugby culture. So far for this book I've interviewed over 300 rugby clubs, individuals, and organizations from the most casual social amateur up to Olympians, professionals, and national team members. I believe that America has never been more factional and divided and that rugby offers a rare antidote - it doesn't matter your race, your religion, your gender, your sexuality, your political idealogy - in rugby you're accepted.

 

This book is a love letter to rugby. I came to rugby late in life at a time when I particularly needed community. Rugby saved my life and I want to give back to the game that's given me so much. I'm a (very) adjunct English professor and doing these interviews and travels on my own funds.
