This is my brother Julian Paz, he's 40, but has been on a bed or a wheelchair for the past 22 years. He grew up in the streets of NYC with his mom, Clara, and brother JC. At 18, an argument with another teenager led to him being shot several times.
We all thought he wouldn't make it, he did, against all odds. He was left with paralysis in his four limbs.
It's been a real struggle for him, yet he comes from a family of fighters. He's a warrior himself. His mom has been caring for him while working full time and battling cancer. His brother is his biggest supporter.
He was contacted by a surgeon, who after analyzing his case thought he could be a good patient for a device that if implanted onto his spine, could eventually give him back senses and movement in his arms.
Although he was insurance, the surgeon does not work with it. He needs a starting $5,500 to have the device placed on his neck. It will be left there for two weeks, if the medical team sees advances, then they will continue to implant the device onto his spine. That will be extra money, but we'll figure it out.
It could work or not, we believe it's worth the try even if there's a slight chance. After being left paralyzed at 18 years old, he's everyday dream is to live to see the day he gets to move again.

Creció en las calles de Nueva York con su mamá, Clara y su hermano Juan Carlos. A los 18 años, una discusión con otro adolescente provocó que le dispararan varias veces.
Todos pensamos que no lo lograría, pero lo hizo, contra todo pronóstico. A raíz de ello, quedó con parálisis en sus cuatro extremidades.
Desde entonces, todo ha sido una verdadera lucha para él, pero pertenece a una familia de luchadores. Él es un guerrero. Su mamá lo ha cuidado mientras trabajaba tiempo completo y luchaba contra el cáncer. Su hermano es su mayor apoyo.
Hace un tiempo fue contactado por un cirujano, quien después de analizar su caso pensó que podría ser un buen paciente para un dispositivo que si se implanta en su columna vertebral, podría eventualmente devolverle los sentidos y el movimiento en sus brazos.
Aunque tiene seguro medico, su cirujano no trabaje con el suyo. Debido a ello necesita $5,500 dólares para colocarle el dispositivo en el cuello, este se le dejará allí durante dos semanas. Si el equipo médico nota avances, continuarán a implantar el dispositivo en su columna vertebral. Eso costará dinero extra, pero entonces veremos como lo resolvemos.
El procedimiento podría funcionar o no, pero incluso si hay una pequeña posibilidad, creemos que vale la pena intentarlo. Al quedar paralizado a los 18 años, su sueño cotidiano es vivir para ver el día en el que pueda moverse de nuevo.
