The Rafael Moreu Scholarship CYBERHUB TRUST

When screenwriter Rafael Moreu began meeting with young computer hackers in NYC as research for the 1995 film 'Hackers', he would join them in the lobby of the CitiCorps building on Lexington Avenue near banks of payphones (kids, ask your parents). It was their unofficial clubhouse. Circling the perimeter were men in suits pretending not to be FBI agents.

Many of the young people Rafael got to know came from households with no clue how to direct their talents as they ran afoul of anti-hacking legislation and were banned from acceptance at Universities. Raf witnessed bright minds pushed from legitimate pathways to success while being courted by nefarious characters grooming them for criminal enterprises. He found this to be a great tragedy as he saw the massively important contribution they could be making to business and society at large.

Rafael believed that young people derided and criminalized for their abilities should instead be celebrated and cultivated, as they embodied the talent needed to preserve truth, protect privacy, safeguard businesses, even uphold Democracy itself.

The CyberHub Trust is an organization that Raf would have loved. The mission of this trust is to find 'at risk' youth (you won't see the word Hackers in their literature) and help guide them into successful IT careers.

The Trust looks at each young person in a holistic way, providing education and - if needed - direct financial assistance so they can manage personal hurdles that might otherwise hinder success.

Cyberhub Trust has helped young people who are the sole providers for younger siblings, or have other situations that require unique assistance for them to thrive. This organization knows that mentorship, education and opportunity can completely alter a young person's life, directing them toward vibrant careers that make our world a safer place. Together we have created the Rafael Moreu Scholarship, the objective of which is to find ways to provide these tools to the young people who would benefit from them the most.
