A day forever engraved on Ron and Susan's minds... the day they set out on a 30 mile bike ride, when suddenly, inexplicably, Susan's bike tipped over, causing her to hit the ground with such great force that her helmet was forced up, exposing the left side of her head,  resulting tragically in a traumatic brain injury.  In less than a second, their lives changed forever and their days are now dominated by the slow process of brain injury recovery.  Her role as wife, mom, sister, daughter, friend,  aunt, athlete, and musician has dramatically changed and we are all grieving those losses, praying she will come back to us as fully and as soon as possible.

Each day is one of change, bringing physical and speech therapy challenges: setbacks caused by bacterial infection; emergency surgery to relieve fluid on the brain; cranioplasty surgery to replace part of the skull: the list goes on and on. Susan's  healing continues with many steps forward and just as many steps backwards, creating a yo-yo of emotions and delays of progress in rehabilitaion. Susan and Ron are facing this unbelievable life event with bravery and great faith, and especially, unbroken love for one another. Love and laughter and music from family and friends is abundant. It is evident that Susan has  loved with abandon and is receiving the same in return.

You can be updated on her progress by reading Ron's journal entries here: caringbridge.org

The goal is for Susan to get stronger and then back into more vigorous rehab and an eventual skull implant surgery. Following  intense inpatient rehab, she will go home and continue with outpatient rehab. Before arriving home, their house will need modifications inside and outside, to allow her complete safety and accessibility. It is possible she will need additional services, such as home Healthcare assistance, especially as Ron returns to work. One of Ron's desires is to create an outdoor sanctuary for Susan, a place where her physical, mental and spiritual health can thrive. Ron, Susan, and Jessica all need continued prayers and support for the duration of this marathon they are immersed in. Your financial support will provide Team Runyon with reserves for the forseen and unforseen challenges ahead. Onward Team Runyon!
