My granddaughter, Emma Faith
was born July 23, 2013 with Omphalocele. Emma's liver, spleen, small & large
intestines, and stomach were outside her body when she was born. Emma was
rushed to surgery at an hour old, where the Doctors put all of her organs back
inside her body, except her liver, which remained outside in a silo for another
week. Emma's liver was swollen which actually saved her life, (It is what held
her skin open and allowed blood flow to the other organs while still in the
womb). If not for that, the skin would have closed up and Emma Faith would have
died.
After one week, Emma was once again in surgery, and after 2 weeks, she had her third surgery to put mesh covering over her exposed 5 cm hole in her belly. Since birth, Emma has been in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) breathing on a ventilator, being fed through a feeding tube, and requiring numerous pain meds and other fluid supplements.
Emma will require at least 2 or more surgeries in the upcoming months. The Doctors estimate her remaining time in the NICU could be anywhere from 2 to 6 months, or longer.
Emma's hospital and living expenses are estimated to be a $1,000,000 or more. For example, one bag of nourishment is $2500 every day, and she has been receiving that nourishment since birth.
Emma's dad is going to college and not working, her mother works, but has not been released to return as of yet by her doctor. They do have insurance, but it does not cover the entire expense.
We are asking for any help small or large to help with all of this. I know God will provide and with your help you can make a difference in this newborns life. Blessings!
