TEAM Kenya 2013-- 5 Challenges: 1: Build a school; 2: start a weaving school 3: Start a sanitation program which will also provide food and income; 4: Host a 3 day event with [phone redacted] street kids, orphans, impoverished children in the Kibera and Mathare slums in Nairobi, Kenya; 5: Provide school supplies, tooth brushes/paste, shoes, and underwear to approximately 1000 kids.
Who Are we? A group of volunteers led by Lydia Ministries International, a non-profit, inter-denominational organization.
When: TEAM Kenya Departs from North Carolina, USA on June 4th. TEAM members will stay either 2, 4, or 6 weeks in Kenya.
Detailed Information: 1: Challenge-- build a school for a Maasai tribe whose children have no school. TEAM KENYA 2009 built phase 1 of a church, which is also used for the school. We provided block presses in 2009. We also provided equipment for hand drilling fresh water wells and making pumps. Since then at least three wells have been successfully drilled, providing clean, fresh water in an area that has suffered from drought for almost 10 years. TEAM K 2013 will build a facility using sustainable compressed earth blocks, with clay tile roof...sustainable, bulletproof, fireproof. Where? Namanga on the border of Kenya/Tanzania.
2: Challenge- Start a weaving school for Maasai women and girls. Train women and girls to weave items which are then sold at Fair market Value. The funds will provide better nutrition; educational scholarships; support the tribe's school; help build a clinic and provide medical care. Women will be provided with interest free micro-financing to purchase the portable looms. An individual will be selected in the tribe to learn to make the looms from materials which are readily available. He will build the looms and provide them to the women at the school at an agreed upon price. The women will purchase the looms with interest free micro-financed loans. The fiber used to weave with is recycled and repurposed. This project is sustainable and will improve the lives of hundreds of Maasai women and girls. It will reduce the carbon foot print due to the recycling of waste material. Lydia Ministries Founder and Director, Susan Walker spent 2 1/2 years at Haywood College, Clyde NC, earning a degree in Professional Fiber Arts to learn the business of weaving, along with marketing in order to steer this project.
3: Challenge: Provide for safe waste disposal at the elementary school and weaving school. What: Build 4 Outhouses at the school and weaving school: The team will build outhouse on moveable "sleds". How: A 4 foot hole is dug. The outhouse on a moveable "sled" is placed over the hole. Once the hole is nearly full another hole is dug beside the current location. The sled is moved over the new hole. The old hole is filled in to within a few inches of the top with soil. A papaya seed is placed in the fresh dirt and covered over. Due to the "fertilizer" from the hole and the water and moisture the papaya tree grows rapidly. Within about two years a very dry waste area becomes a papaya grove. The trees provide shade and help to cool the area. The school teachers are allowed to sale the fruit to provide an income for the teachers. In exchange, the teachers move the outhouses, dig the holes, fill the holes in, and plant the papaya trees. They educate the tribe about the necessity to use sanitary measures to prevent death due to disease and illness from viruses and bacterial infections.
4: Challenge: Host a Three-Day Mission to Kenya's Kids: Kibera and Mathare slums are the world's second and third largest slums with over 1 million people and over 100,000 street kids and orphans in a 2.2 sq. mile area in Nairobi, Kenya. These children live in the most dire circumstances on earth. Many have been victimized sexually, emotionally, and physically. Most do not eat for two-three days at a time..they range in age from infants/toddlers on up to teens. For three days TEAM Kenya 2013 will host an event in the Kibera slums. The children will receive breakfast and lunch each day of the event. They will watch movies, play games, watch skits, engage in music and dance. The theme this year will focus on drug awareness. The goal is to offer hope to these children who find little to be hopeful about.
5: Challenge: Provide Approximately 1000 children with school supplies (crayons, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, colored pencils, scissors, rulers), socks, shoes, toothbrushes/paste, soap, hand sanitizer, and underwear. TEAM KENYA 2009 provided approximately 600 children with school supplies and approximately 100 with underwear. We will also provide them with baseballs and other sports equipment, books, classroom teaching charts and materials.
Please help us help the least of these! No one on the team receives financial compensation for the work. 100% of the funds goes to ensure the success of the mission. We are all volunteers, even the leader and director, Susan Walker. We have been working with the Maasai people for almost 7 years and are committed to an ongoing partnership with this tribe to aid them in their own personal goals of advancing their people during a time when the nomadic life style and changing country around them will no longer support them. This tribe is very progressive. They desire educational opportunities for their children. We are there at the invitation of the tribe, their Chief Ole Sadira, and the elders. We respect their tribal life and culture and our goal is to only give them the support they have requested. We seek to empower them, not to entrap them in "social programs". We offer to train them new skills to accomplish the goals they desire--such as how to build with sustainable compressed earth blocks, training the women to weave and providing them with the funds then to attain their goals of having better nutrition, educational scholarships for their daughters, and medical care for their families.
