The Fire Took Most Everything

Earlier New Year’s Eve morning, we received one of the most terrifying phone calls that we’d hope would never come. A fire broke out at my wife’s family’s home (Michael & Ann Swiderski and son Chris) and they’d need us to get over there right away. My father in law was in the basement when he suffered a heart attack and dropped a cigarette while he was smoking. His pacemaker kicked in and after he recovered his senses, the fire was out of control and their attempts to put it out were in vain. Though only a portion of the house was destroyed by actual fire, the heat and smoke damaged or contaminated the majority of the rest of the home.
First and foremost, I absolutely have to say how grateful we are for our local area Police and Fire Departments in doing what they could and to save as much as they did. It was bitter cold that morning and they worked tirelessly to do everything they could for us. I’m hoping we may be able to repay their efforts and kindness on what was supposed to be a celebratory day. Additionally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how my brother in law, Chris, saved both his parents and his dog with his quick thinking. Incredible. Everyone is safe.
Needless to say, most of their belongings are gone or emenate an unmistakable smokey stench that serves as a reminder of that fateful morning. Pungence aside, we saved some of the more important things - family photos, a few clothes items, heirloom jewelry, etc. Unfortunately, as Michael and Ann are both medically disabled, their income is minimal and their homeowner’s insurance lapsed. We have a long road ahead as we work to rebuild or move on with their lives.
We have no experience or expectations with this kind of tragedy. We really don’t know what to do next...I was hoping to appeal to you all. If there’s anyone that can lend a hand and spread the word, we will be forever grateful and do whatever we can to pay it forward in the future. Thank you and god bless.
