COVID19 - Support for young Tibetan Monks

Donation protected
Through this crowdfunding, we want to support our Tibetan friend Tenzin Jhyampa Ghale. He is a Tibetan monk leading the Shang Gadhen Choekhor Ling Monastery located in Paljorling Tibetan settlement, Pokhara, in Nepal. We reached out to Tenzin Jhyampa and asked him how he's doing during these tough times. At first, he insisted he’s okay, but after a long chat, we realized that he needs support. We decided to support him and his young monks financially, after which he began to share struggles and the needs of the young monks he takes care of.

The monastery was initially built by senior monks, who fled from the mother monastery in Tibet. Today a new, young generation of monks is taking care of the monastery, all its practices, ritual performances, and essential Buddhist study. The principal aim is to enable modern education to the young monks.

Tenzin has sent 19 monks to community school to study; science, mathematics, and social studies as well as Tibetan and computer sciences so they can get the Government accepted certificates for the fifth grade. In the morning and evening, the young monks additionally learn to memorize scripture and to uphold the traditional Monastery knowledge. After the fifth grade, the Monastery sends the monks to Sera Monastery in South India for secondary school.

Throughout their secondary school, when the young monks are in South India, the Monastery still provides for them and covers their school fees, clothing, and stationeries. Given the current circumstances, this is proving challenging, hence making the Monastery depend on outside support.

A big worry for Tenzin Jhyampa is that in Nepal, they have no health insurance, so the Monastery has to cover medical expenses out of pocket, which is a great source of uncertainty at the best of times.

The Tibetan families of the young monks are mostly not able to provide any financial support, some of which are still in Tibet and send their children abroad in the hopes of a better life. Often children are sent to a Monastery because the parents can't afford education and upbringing.

Tenzin Jhyampa takes on an enormous responsibility that we appreciated deeply with each of the monks he takes on, which sparked our motivation to start this Crowdfunding.

A short story from our family history with Tibetans:

Valerie Peer von Sicherer founded Tibetan Flower more than 20 years ago. She organized around 100 parent ships for Tibetan Children, living as refugees in Nepal or India, and made it possible for them to get a good school education, which opened the opportunity to study abroad. She was close to the Dalai Lama and showcased the problems of the Tibetans with her documentary photography and speeches. She emphasized and supported the personal contact between the children and godparents; an intensive connection started and is still going on with the Tibetans. Now 20 years later, we decided to move Tibetan Flower into the age of the Internet and to try crowdfunding to help the ones in need.

We would be very thankful to be able, together with your support, to give Tenzin Jhyampa and his Monastery the help he needs to continue his care for these young people and enable them to have a good school education, as well as preserve traditional Buddhist knowledge and culture.

Thank you so much. Tashi Delek!
