In May of 2015, Sunny, an otherwise healthy 3-year old, was rushed to the emergency room because she was suffering from anaphylactic shock. Luckily, upon arriving and being given medication for an allergic reaction, her symptoms subsided.

Sunny was referred to an allergist who did blood work, looking at the Mast cell count. Another blood sample was taken in order to confirm the elevated levels of mast cells. Sunny was referred to a Hematologist/ Oncologist at Randall’s Children’s Hospital who confirmed through more blood work the specific diagnosis of Systemic Mastocytosis.

A bone marrow biopsy was done to determine where in her body the mutated cells are located. The bone marrow biopsy was negative for Leukemic Mastocytosis, which means that luckily it is not in her bone marrow. But as of right now, we don’t know where it is hiding. We simply must wait for it to attack her body.

Sunny must be monitored by the doctors on a regular basis. Blood work must be performed every three months to check the levels of Mast cells in Sunny’s body. An annual bone marrow biopsy must be conducted as well to eliminate the possibility of it spreading to the bone marrow.

There are multiple triggers to the Mast cells becoming more aggresive within Sunny. For example, emotional distress can look like a normal child throwing a tantrum, but for Sunny, this can result in anaphylactic shock and a trip to the emergency room.

On, July 20th, Sunny and her family were informed that they were accepted to be a patient at the Mastocytosis Center of Excellence located in Boston, Massachusetts.  We hope to have further answers to our questions and to come away with a concrete treatment plan.

There is no cure for Sunny, however through symptom management and frequent monitoring of blood work and how she reacts to certain foods, environments and stress. We can provide a better quality and quantity of life.

With all the testing (blood work and yearly bone marrow biopsy), specialty doctors, traveling and medications,  the cost of health care is rising quickly. Thank you for visiting this page. There is a long road of hurdles, but with support from all of you, it will make journey easier.
