Squid's Angels

On Saint Patrick's Day evening we went for a walk on the farm with our our puppy Squid. She is a 10 month old Italian greyhound mix. She was running and playing with the chickens and cat and having the time of her life! She loves to run!! She ran to the bottom of the farm to play with the chickens .. yes she really does play with them, and we new something was not right. We started to call her to come back but we heard nothing but an ATV, running, barking and yelling. Before we knew it they (will not mention who) had sicked their large dog onto her. The dog attacked her when she was in complete submission on her back because she thought the dog was going to play with her! He had her completely in his mouth! I don't even know how she got away. She came running to me and I didn't stop moving till we were at the emergency vet. She wasn't able to go into surgery until the next morning after she recovered from the shock.

Surgery lasted much longer than expected because the damage was worse than we thought. She was attacked when she was in submission rolled on her back with her belly up.  So the damage to her intestines was severe. The Vet removed over a foot of her intestine and observed the extensive bruising to the rest of her organs. Learning this was devastating! All we could do was wait for her to wake up which was taking longer than it should.

We heard back from the vet later that evening with even more bad news. Come to learn the surgery has left her paralyzed on her two back legs and tail.

I have barely slept since this began,  wrecked with worry but trying to stay positive.. We are facing a huge bill, from the surgery to all the medicines and pain killers and anti nausea, we still can not take her home she has to stay in the hospital on IV. And when we finally do get to bring our angel home she will need so much care from puppy pads and diapers, and her new special diet until her body can deal with losing that large piece of her intestine, to a 'new wheel chair' so she will be able to run again.

We appreciate everyone who has donated and helped us more than you know! She means the world to us. She is truly the sweetest girl and she has been a lifesaver to her big brother Eddie who has had to deal with his own neck injury. She has helped him become more mobile and playful again so we want to do everything we can for her.
We can’t imagine our life without our little angel!

Squid Update: So lucky to spend a few hours with our little Squid today ❤️ It really is incredible that she is alive! Such a strong little girl ❤️ today was day 1 after surgery and she is being monitored. The dog that attacked her was trying to kill her and it’s incredible that she got away!!! The injuries to her abdomen and organs are severe. They are hoping she will begin to heal with out any fluid building up or infection. Hopefully we are in the clear and on the mend with here little tummy. But because of the injuries/bite marks to her back and spine when she woke up from surgery she is paralyzed from the hips back, she can no longer move her back legs. We are hopeful that once the swelling goes down she will regain sensation and movement but right now she is still critical. Thank you everyone who has donated I will be emailing you all huge thanks you are all angels!! We are needing all the help we can get for our little girl! I will be able to see her again tomorrow but she doesn’t get to come home with us yet.

Squid Update: Got to spend only an hour with Squid today and she fell right asleep in my hand and Eddie’s nook ❤️ ❤️ wish I could stay there with her. I know she needs Eddie and I to heal faster but she has to stay on IV still. They are working on feeding her chicken baby food today with a syringe so the goal in no throwing up praying for her to stay strong. Thank you everyone for your messages, comments, prayers and donations! Each message and comment I read keeps me strong and positive

Squid Update: ❤️ ❤️ Day 3 - 5 are critical to be sure her intestines are functioning with all the damage, surgery and bruising. Still a waiting game. She is on heavy pain killers and anti nausea medicine but she is eating baby food!!!!! And that is really hopeful ❤️ ❤️ Baby Squid you are our tough little angel ! So happy to spend time with her! She is having some pretty bad swelling with her back legs and still no movement but she seems perky as anyone could be after going through something like this. Thank you everyone for all your help and donations!! It’s definitely hard to stay focused but just keep reminding myself to stay positive and strong for her!
