My four-year-old niece, Sophie, is the perfect combination of sass and sweetness. Right now, she is very sick and could really use your help.
Sophie is in Madison Childrens Hospital in acute kidney failure due to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is a condition that destroys red blood cells and kidney function. Sophie developed HUS after becoming seriously ill from exposure to shiga-toxin (a strand of e-coli). She spent five days in the ICU and was recently transferred to the nephrology ward.
Currenly, Sophie's kidneys do not function at all. She is dependent on dialysis and recieves blood transfusions to combat the shiga-toxin that is still in her system. There are many complications from HUS and she has struggled her way through them all. But her fight is far from over. She may need new kidneys and will certainly need long-term hospital care.
As you can imagine, this is a parents worst nightmare. My brother and sister-in-law have not left her side. Sophie is going to be in the hospital for an undetermined amount of time undergoing numerous treatments. There is so much that we don't know at this point because her situation changes daily. What we do know is that she is a fighter and she will get through this.
I am asking for your help in alleviating some of their financial burden so they can focus all their energy on being there for Sophie. I am hoping to offset some of the costs associated with their lost wages, medical treatment, hospital costs, prescriptions, and ongoing care.
Thanks in advance for all your help and support.
