Life has given it to me to help build this school. Please help us make it something special. The potential is so beautiful...
In a tiny village in the rainforest of Panama, the people are losing their culture. And so together we are building a traditional school, to teach and celebrate their ancestral indigenous practices - botanical medicine, agricultural techniques, language, and more. And also to teach sustainable modern development to this evolving remote community. Please read more for details (you can scroll to read the bold lines for a summary), and please give generously!
The villagers named the school Soambá: the Common Heart.
For months they came together, laboring barefoot to build a large traditional lodge. Each work day they ate a meal cooked over an open fire, and together they imagined the possibilities.
The people of the village are watching their culture disappear. They are the Emberá, the original tribe of the Darien Rainforest in Panama. Traditionally, they live off the earth, using ancient sustainable ways. But now they face commercial globalization, which brings plastic bags and reality TV, and piles of burning trash. It also brings ignorance and forgetting: the younger generation no longer learns how to make the tools for living in the rainforest. They don't learn the medicinal plants. They don't learn their native language. When the older generation passes on, the Emberá will lose their wise methods and knowledge. They will lose their rainforest survival skills, their cultural heritage. And they will lose their precious natural independence.
And we will lose another global culture, the people who keep the rainforest alive. Cattle ranchers are moving in adjacent to the villagers' territory, slashing the forest to graze their cows for exported beef. They are threatening the very livelihood of the village, as chemical pesticides and herbicides kill off the shrimp and fish. Without the Emberá, the rainforest has no advocate. It won't withstand the onslaught.
So the people of the village have asked for a school of their own: a place to teach and celebrate the Emberá way of life. A cultural center where their traditions will continue despite the onslaught of commercialism. At Soambá, the original sustainable living methods will be taught by elders to the youngers. They will teach on weekends so there is no conflict with the government school, and everyone will get a traditional meal to celebrate community. The young adults are very excited to learn, and to eventually teach.
Our program goals:
--> Design a core cultural curriculum with the villagers.
--> Expand to include other villages and outside guests.
--> Invite outside experts to teach the Emberá about sustainable development methods such as do-it-yourself water filtration, composting latrines, & green electricity generation.
--> Connect with other Native American/Indigenous groups throughout the Americas, to foster pride and sustainment of original wisdom.
We are working to fund our second full pilot. Please understand that I am not earning any payment for this. I am driven by passion - for the rainforest, ancestral traditions and the common humanity of all peoples. I have been lucky to find friends in the rainforest who feel the same way. We are so grateful for any amount you can offer.
My name is Tami Kellogg. I am an emergency doctor who chose to leave hospitals and go work for non-profit sailing schools and historic tall ships. I have volunteered in disaster zones and developing countries. I am fluent in Spanish...so I first visited the village to assist with an educational trip for American students. When the Emberá asked me for help, it was as if life pointed me there for a reason, and I simply could not refuse. I stayed for months at first, and used my own money to pay for building the school. Now I have moved to Panama in order to make this a reality.
Now it is time to make Soambá, Our Common Heart, blossom, to have it arise from the heart of the world community. We are formally planning with an Emberá Advisory Committee for the future of Soambá. Working together, with support from both our communities, north and south, industrialized and agrarian, colonial and indigenous, we aim to create something amazing.

En una aldea en el bosque lluvioso de Panama, la gente están perdiendo su cultura. Entonces, juntos construimos una escuela tradicional, para enseñar y celebrar sus prácticas ancestrales indígenas – medicina botánica, técnicas agrícolas, idioma, y más. Tambien para introducir desarrollo industrializado que sea sostenible a esta comunidad en evolución. Los habitantes del pueblito nombraron la escuela Soambá: el Corazon Unido. Durante meses solían unirse, lavorando descalsos para construir una gran casa traditional. Cada día lavoral, comieron un almuerzo cocinado sobre un fogón, y juntos imaginaron las posibilidades.
La gente del pueblo ven que su cultura se está desaparaciendo. Son los Emberá, la tribu original del bosque del Darien, en Panama. Tradicionalmente, viven en harmonía con La Tierra, usando métodos sostenibles y ancianos. Ahora, afrontan a la globalizacion comercial, que trae bolsas plásticas y telenovelas, y montones de basura quemando. También trae la ignorancia y el olvidar: la juventud ya no sabe hacer las herramientas necesarias para una vida en la selva. No aprenden las plantas medicinales. Ni siquiera aprenden su idioma nativa. Cuando la generación anciana fallece, los Emberá perderán sus conocimientos sábios. Perderán sus habilidades de sobrevivir, su herencia cultural. Y perderán su preciosa independencia natural.
Y perderemos nosotros otra cultura global, la cultura que guarda el bosque. Rancheros ya acercan al pueblito, derrumbando la selva para criar ganado por exportación. Amenazan el mismo bienestar del pueblo: los químicas contra malezas y plagas están matando a los camarones y peces en su río. Sin los Emberá, la selva no tendrá defensor. No aguantará el ataque.
Entonces la gente del pueblo han pedido su propria escuela: un sitio para enseñar y celebrar la vida indígena. Un centro cultural donde sus tradiciones seguirán contra el ataque de comercialismo. En Soambá, los métodos originales de vivir sosteniblemente son mostrados por ancianos a los jóvenes. Enseñan los fines de semana para no chocar con la escuela del gobierno. Todos reciben una comida tradicional para celebrar la comunidad. Los jóvenes están entusiasmados para aprender, y eventualmente enseñar.
Nuestras metas:
--> Diseñar un currículo fundamental junto con la gente del pueblo.
--> Expandir para incluir otros pueblos y invitados de afuera.

Ahora llegó al momento de hacer Soambá florecer, hacerle ascender del corazon de la comunidad mundial. Estamos trabajando juntos, con apoyo de nuestras ambas comunidades, norteñas y sureñas, industrializadas y agrarias, coloniales y indígenas, para crear algo asombroso.
