Send Samuel J. Green 8th Graders to Atlanta

March 2012

Dear Friend of Green,

Samuel J. Green is excited to announce that we will be taking our Eighth Graders on a trip to Atlanta in May.  Our students work hard to master rigorous academic standards and strive to live by our charter way values.  This dedication to schoolwork and commitment our values will leave a higher standard for future Green eighth graders to live up to.

We also know that hard work is not enough to insure our students' future success"”their success in high school, college, and career also depends on their cultural capital.  By traveling to Atlanta, our students will be exposed to out-of-state college opportunities, experience first-hand key monuments of the Civil Rights Movement, learn etiquette such as how to tour a museum and conduct yourself politely in a restaurant, and learn to travel as ambassadors of our school and New Orleans.  These experiences will put our students on even footing with their peers as they work to be successful at competitive high schools and colleges.

The cost of the trip for each student is over $ 450.00.  Each family will be contributing a third of the cost, Green will be contributing a third of the cost, and the students will be raising the final third of the cost through activities such as: t-shirt sales, raffles, car washes, student-to-student greeting card sales, and gifts from friends of Green.  Our goal is for our students' families to be invested in the project, for our students to build community as they earn a portion of their trip, and for their community to show support by making contributions to their trip.

If you want to participate in sending our students to Atlanta, there are several levels to this giving opportunity. It is important to us that the eighth graders have a sense that their community is behind them and your gift will be recognized by name on this site.  You can donate at in any amount, but know that

·       A $ 20    gift will pay for admission for one student to the Fernback Science Center, the Underground Tour of Atlanta or the Civil Right Tour.

·       A $ 50    gift will pay for one day's admission and food vouchers at one of Atlanta's premier amusement parks.

·       A $ 75    gift will pay for one student's hotel accommodation.

·       A $ 100 gift will pay for one's student's food for the entire trip.

·       A $150 gift will cover one student's transportation to, within, and from Atlanta.

Green serves its students with limited financial resources.  Your gift will have a significant impact our students' future.  Thank you for continuing to partner with our students.  We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

The Eighth Grade Team
