SYDNEY'S DANCING 'FEAT' 2015
This is SYDNEY GUINE, age 12. She started dancing when she was 3, and hasn't stopped since. Thanks to her dedicated teachers (with a special thanks to Nancy Dobbs-Owen, The Performing Arts Center in Van Nuys,CA, and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Baldwin Hills), she claims some proficiency in 10 styles of dance (Ballet, Tap, Horton, Dunham, Graham, Flamenco, Jazz, Hip-hop, African , and Contemporary!) She dances and dances and dances (24 hours per week, at last count!) She also has straight A's for both her first and now second year in middle school! For the second year in a row, Sydney has been invited to Philadelphia for 5 weeks this summer to study classical ballet at The Rock Center for Dance Education (www.therockschool.org). She has also submitted an audition video for Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company in New York City. Both will offer tremendous opportunities for personal and artistic growth, and we are thrilled for her!
Last Summer, with your assistance, Sydney increased proficiency in technique, style, and stamina. She left her last class, and stated, "I actually feel like a ballerina". Please help her continue along this path. What could be more worthwhile than a girl on the verge of her 'teen years increasing her self-confidence 10-fold?
Last year, we had to borrow money to fill in the gaps for tuition and housing. This year, if we are unable to raise the entire amount needed, we will just apply what we've got to her dance tuition for the coming year. If we raise MORE than needed, extra funds will be applied towards her tuition for NEXT Summer's dance intensive, wherever her dancing feet may take her. (Watch out, New York City!!!!)
This young lady, petite but powerful, plans to go a long way in the arts. She currently has her heart set on joining Alvin Ailey Dance Company Company, or Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company, both in New York. She is, to be sure, quite serious.
To help with costs, Mom is giving up her Summer (she works full time as a social worker), and has applied for a job as a chaperone. But even if Mom is hired, this covers a very small portion of the final bill. We need help with room and board (at a nearby college), airfare, additional pointe shoes, and so much more....(see attached wish list if you'd like contribute for a specific item)
So here is where you come in. We aren't asking you to foot the whole bill.... BUT if you can contribute $10-$20-$50-$100 (or more?) it will add up VERY quickly. YOU may not think that your individual contribution will help much, but through small and large contributions of any amount, we can get there quickly.
Some of you are my friends from middle school. We danced, or acted, or played music together. And I KNOW how much you still love the arts. What better way to show it? Contribute, and pass this message along to your art-supporting friends.
Others of you are friends from other times in our lives, and we treasure you all. Please help us, won't you? If it's a bad time for you financially, hey, we get that. So pass this along to someone else in your life....friends, family, colleagues....people who can perhaps spare 10 or 20....a few lattes a week.....to help Sydney achieve her dreams.
