Horses Can Help!

Hi,

We are a small team of Armed Forces Veterans and we need your help.

It is sadly still the case that veterans suicide rates here in the UK are increasing every year and we feel we can't stand by any longer and do nothing (this is where we need your help).

Life after the military can be very challenging and extremely lonely, even when you have your loved ones around you. With the corrrect information and the right tools and support it is  possible to get things back on track. Our team understand very clearly the challenges involved and we feel now it is time that we spread the word and raise awareness.

Horses and horsmanship was discovered to be very beneficial for veterans facing mental health problems as there are so many similarities and parallels between a veteran and a horse. After receiving some clinical treatment the biggest challenge that we faced was fitting in and having the courage to try something new.

We were helped by horses!

We have recently been challenged to compete and complete the Rallye Maroc 2020. This is a horseback endurance event In the Essouira region of Southern Morocco. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for charities based here in the UK who are on the front line dealing with veterans mental health and helping the wider community, as well as raising awareness amoung our friends and colleagues that it's ok not to be ok.

If you have a friend or relative who has served in the military or you just love horses and you already know how much they can help our veterans, then please consider donating what you can so we can raise awareness and hopefully prevent another suicide.

THE TEAM

saddle up soldiers is a team of veterans who have all used equine therapy as a form of recovery and it was our recovery that brought us together.

Neil Meager

As a former Royal Marine Neil joined the forces on his 17th birthday in 1999 and reached the rank of corporal. He was deployed on several different operational tours and  was achieving great things when suddenly near the end of his career some family tragedies forced him to face a challenging transition to civilian life. Neil has a young family and is currently rebuilding his life and he is a true survivor in every sense of the word. His love for horses was first realised as a youngster thanks to his parents who kept horses but having joined the military at such a young age it was all soon a distant memory. That's until he started using horsmanship as a form of recovery.

Jason Smith

Sapper Smith or Jay to his friends had a challenging time since leaving the forces just trying to make sense of life. A few challenging tours of Iraq and bosnia took its tole and after a long battle with physical and mental injuries he was diagnosed with PTSD.  He soon found the charity Combat Stress where he began his personal recovery. He has worked non stop to find the best version of himself and is always around for his friends, Jays experience of riding began on joining the Army at 16.  Residing close to the Lake district, has enabled him to ride various Lakeland routes with his partner and her father, who are both keen riders. He is also a very talented singer who is not shy to give you a song or two. This event will be quite testing for him physically, because of disabilities due to service, however he is determined to battle physical pain for the mental benefits of the event.

Harry Marshall

Harry is a former Infantryman who served with the Royal Highland Fusiliers, he had quite a short career but by no means an easy one. He was caught in a bomb blast during operations in Bosnia where as a young soldier he was badly traumatised, this then lead to him being diagnosed with complex PTSD. Harry also found Combat Stress and began a recovery journey that would last for seven years. During that time he attended Horseback UK in Scotland who gave him a new set of skills working with horses. He currently volunteers at Kinfauns Stables.

Thank you for taking the time to read this page and we truly hope you can help us make this event a success. A film crew will be joining us in the desert so we can keep you all up to speed with our progress and show you the highlights of the event.

The most important thing we can do in life is be there for one another and we hope to raise this money and awareness with a strong message that......

It's OK not to be OK!
