Saving Nick! Rare Immune Deficiency
Nicholas is an 11 year old child in need of a bone marrow transplant. Nicholas has a rare immune deficiency and fungal infection. When Nicholas was first seen in the emergency room for a stomach ache in 2009 the doctors informed my husband and I that he had cancer. It was not until about a week later after a biopsy that the doctors at Children’s Hospital of Michigan discovered that the massive pseudo mass in his abdomen was fungus. Subsequently after several years of treatment at Children’s Nick case was presented to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Researchers and doctors, after multiple years of visiting NIH for treatment and testing, were finally able to conclude that the underlying cause of his uncommon case was an extremely rare immune deficiency named CARD9. This immune deficiency prevents Nick’s body from fighting off fungus. Through more testing and research it was determined that the only real cure for Nick’s condition would be to fix his genetic mutation through a bone marrow transplant.
