Prayers For Logan - Brain Tumor Recovery

On the night of June 20th, 2014 Logan Green (a smart, sweet, comical 5 year old boy who was thought to be totally healthy) collapsed in the hallway on the way to his parent’s room. Logan's parent’s immediately rushed him to the emergency room where they did a CT and found a large mass on the back of his brain. After telling Logan's parents the news, the doctors at the emergency room immediately had Logan flight for life to the nearest big hospital.
Saturday June 21st Logan's parents received the most devastating news a parent could ever get...Crisandra and Richard were told that Logan had a brain tumor and that it was 100% inside his brain stem and it was completely inoperable. The doctor gave Crisandra, who was 9 months pregnant at the time, and Richard the news that Logan only had a few days to live. They were told that they just needed to accept the fact that Logan was not going to make it.
Against the surgeon’s wishes Logan’s parents, Crisandra and Richard Green, got a second opinion from a different surgeon at the Barrow Institute in the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Not only did the doctors at Phoenix Children’s claim they could operate on the tumor, they also believed that most if not all of it was on the outside of his brain stem; Logan was immediately transferred. Once Logan arrived at Phoenix Children's the wonderful surgeons immediately explained to Richard and Crisandra that the tumor their son had looked like a Ependemoma tumor and they thought most of it if not all of it was outside of the brainstem.
A few days after Logan was relocated, he went in for brain surgery and the surgeon’s retrieved the whole tumor! As the surgeon came out to deliver the good news, he was so excited about the outcome of the surgery that he claimed to be “giddy” while telling the Green’s how the surgery went, which is not a word a doctor verbalizes very often. We were all ecstatic to hear the news! A few days prior Logan was given a 0% chance of survival and now he has a fully fighting chance.
Logan and his family are not out of the woods yet. His parents were told that his brain tumor was malignant (Cancerous) and very aggressive... a stage 3 Ependymoma and that he was going to need to have additional treatment as soon as possible so the tumor does not come back and spread.
Logan is fighting harder than anyone to take his life back. His will for survival is incredible. The doctors, nurses and therapists have all said that they have never seen a child with such strength and devotion to getting better. He has had to re-learn to walk, sit-up, talk, as well as many other everyday life tasks; he practices these things all day, even if what he is doing hurts, he fights through it.
Logan’s biggest hurdle since surgery has been having to learn how to swallow and talk again. Two things you and I take for granted but Logan has had to fight tooth and nail to try to get back. Even though Logan isn't swallowing and talking yet he is progressing more and more each day. Our Superhero is doing the unthinkable, the extraordinary. There truly is a great plan for this little man and he is going to do great things. He has already done so much... Logan has taught us all to have faith even when all odds are against you!
Although Logan is on the road to recovery, his journey will be long and is by no means over yet. Logan will be heading to San Diego for 6 1/2 weeks of proton radiation therapy to make sure that the cancer is gone.
It is important to the Green's that Logan receives Proton therapy instead of traditional radiation therapy because of the damaging long term side effects of radiation therapy including secondary cancer, hormonal issues, and cognitive damage causing learning disabilities. This is why we have set up a fundraiser for the Green Family.
The therapy Logan will be doing in San Diego is a very costly therapy along with the added expenses of travel, lodging and food all while paying to keep their home in Arizona, where their three older children will be staying, as they are starting school next week.
On top of the future expenses they will be incurring, the Green's have also been told that their insurance is denying the charges for the helicopter ride to Phoenix Children's Hospital because supposedly the hospital that told them that their little boy only had three days to live was "just as capable as caring for Logan as Phoenix Children's Hospital" Of course Richard and Crisandra did not let that stop them from saving their little boy’s life so they are looking at charges of at least $35,000 just for the helicopter ride alone.
We wanted to thank everyone so much for the tremendous amount of love and support that has been so abundant and greatly appreciated. All of the prayers and positive energy that have been sent towards Logan and his mom and dad have helped to keep them strong through all of this, not to mention the smile that comes across Logan’s face when he see pictures of friends and family in their Super Logan T-Shirts!
