Progressive Residential Services is a non-profit 501(c)(3) located in Battle Creek, Michigan which provides services to individuals throughout Calhoun County. Our programs work to provide adults and children with Developmental Disabilities and other some dually diagnosed conditions with opportunities to achieve goals and to more fully participate in their community.
In our community inclusion building we are working to create 3 fully integrated environmental themed sensory rooms that will be tactile, 3 dimensional additions to make a simulated natural environment that will assist clients to relax or stimulate them to learn Activity of Daily Living Skills (ADL’s). People who possess Developmental Disabilities or Sensory Integration issues struggle with simple day to day sensory overload or lack of sensory stimulation. This impacts behavior, learning ability or other daily living skills. Sensory Integration rooms and equipment have been a proven therapy to help with disabilities by providing a calming or stimulating environment to interact in that creates relaxation from stress in the environment or stimulation to engage in learning.
We have begun the project by completing stage one, purchase of sensory equipment and stage two has commenced brining in muralists to paint the walls into the following 3 themes:
The Under the Sea Grotto Room: A coral reef with a pirate ship wreck encompassing a fish tank built into one wall viewable through the ships cannon ball damaged side. The ship will be aged wood to give it a tactile and realistic feel. On the ceiling a boat with people looking down into the grotto will become three dimensional as a fishing line drops into the room from a pole hanging over the boat and anchor coming to the ocean floor. LED lighting in the room will give wave action movement of blue and green colors throughout making you feel as if you are underwater. At night, black light LED lighting make the fish come to life and scenes pop in glow in the dark colors. A Sensory station with LED bubble tube and fiber optic light station add sound and light in one corner of the room along with other special effects and sound buttons attached to under the sea creatures.

We will include this bubble tube along with built in fish tank centered in a sunken pirate ship to help relax and sooth clients while providing the feeling of being underwater.
Butterfly/Fairy Meadow Movie Sensory Room: This magical scene where fairies & butterflies dominate bring you to the focal point, a large oak tree with built in fairy homes that will be part mural, part 3D and lite up when fairies are home. This small meadow theme where leaves, vines, flowers attach to the mural bring the meadow theme throughout. Butterflies and fairies coming out of the walls, other fairies remain faceless with a mirror attached where the participant can become a fairy in the scene by looking into the mirror. A cocoon swing sits in the corner and under a 3D fairy home a projector/DVD player sits projecting on a built in movie screen for movies or themed learning videos. LED lighting makes this room all one color or can create lightning storms, yellow sunrises, pink sunsets or a fairy party scene. Sound buttons and 3D attachments carved from foam will make the art pop off the walls.

Fall Waterfall Sensory Relaxation Room: This Michigan, fall themed sensory room will use the sound of water and visual water flow to complement artwork while relaxing and soothing clients. A scene of fall foliage, painted and three dimensional, will cover the ceiling and walls. The centerpiece will be artist Stan Snyder’s painting of a fall waterfall scene, except the drop of the waterfall will come to life with an actual fountain to match the mural created by Growing Point, a local pet store and pond/fountain business co-owned by Greg Potter. This will give a feel of the water in the mural coming out into the space through sound and visual effect. Included in this room will be Lazy Boy vibration chairs that will help calm, especially when surrounded by a white canopy with leaves attached that can surround the chairs, giving a feeling of security. LED lighting can make the room orange, red, or a soft white glow of a beautiful fall day or evening. Animals throughout the room from Michigan will have interactive sound buttons, fur or antlers attached to accent the room for tactile themed activity or story space.
