Puerto Rico was hit by Maria on Sept 20, 2017 and today on Oct 20, 2017, 30 days later, the island is still 90% without power and 60% without water. But, this water is not being treated due to lack of power. There have been numerous deaths due to people drinking untreated water and many more are sick due to bacteria in it.
Ecoli and/or Leptospiral have been confirmed to be in the water of various towns.
I am starting this small fund to quickly buy and distribute 150 water filters to community centers and schools to provide safe drinking water to about +600 people in the Aibonito area. In order for Aibonito to get clean water 3 pump stations need to be tuned on as well as the water treatment plant in order to pump up the water 1000ft up the mountain. This is a tall order as power in the Metro area is practically non existent and so anything in the center of the island will take many more months. Without more aid quick a long term plan for clean water for this community will not be possible.
I will personally purchase and distribute filters like the Sawyer mini filter that are small and extremely verstile depending on where it is deployed. They are also extremely straightforward and can filter out bacteria and viruses to 99.99999%.
Cost details: -One 4 pack of Sawyer Mini Filtration System=$109.95 -150 Filters with shipping come out to= $4,068.15
I am trying to get to 150 as fast a possible.
Please help me establish clean water for the people most affected in the center of the island as sadly this situation is not going to get better any time soon.
Being a photographer I will document the whole process of purchasing, delivery, implementation as well as those who you will be providing clean water for.
