Community School & Sustainable Farm

Donation protected
Summary:

*2019 UPDATE* Thanks to your generosity, we have secured ownership of the land in Arua! We negotiated a down payment to transfer ownership and an open term payback plan for the remainder of the land cost that we will be continuing to raise funds for. This term allows us to farm and develop the land in the interim.  We have completed the survey and are in the process of updating the design to align with the nuances of the site, as well as securing licenses from the ministry of education. We are seeking organizational partners for large scale funding, however, individual donations will continue to drive the project and are immeasurably appreciated. A huge thank you to all of our donors to date!

See below for full project details.

----------------------

Seeking to raise $8,500 to purchase a 5-acre parcel of land in Arua, Uganda for the Kampala based non-profit Peace For Children, Africa (PCA). Arua is located in the northern part of the country in proximity to the Congo & South Sudan border. *see 2019 update*

I will be overseeing the land purchase with the help of local contacts and we will be consulting with the non-profit UK based design charity Building Trust International on the project as we move into the design and construction phases.

Site sourced materials and vernacular construction methodology will be combined with passive solar design to create a unique and functional community development. A volunteer trip combined with locally sourced skilled labor will be used to see the project to fruition and local engineer is currently conducting an official survey of the land.

We are seeking partner organizations to consult on farming best practices to maximize the agricultural use of the land.

The Beneficiaries:

PCA is a non-governmental community-based organization that supports orphans, vulnerable street children, and their families, providing them access to new opportunities for a better life while attempting to reconnect them to their families and communities.

I worked on-site with PCA and its founder Paul directly in 2012 helping expand and upgrade the existing facility in Uganda with a new kitchen and other improvements.

PCA provides outreach, identification, assessment, enrollment, referral, and advocacy services. They currently operate a transitional home in Bulange, assist street children and orphans with education placement, and provide additional services on an emergency basis within the Kampala slums; including a transitional shelter in the Kisenyi slum with weekly food, medication, and education programs.

PCA delivers its services through an extensive network of partners including: community leaders in Kisenyi and Katwe; government leaders from the departments of Internal Affairs, Gender, Labor and Social Development; Members of Parliament; the Kampala City Council; and local and international organizations. PCA also provides additional services to at-risk women in the slums, and their families.

PCA is in the process of expanding its services. This project will provide a safe, stable location for education, food, and safety. When possible, the children will be resettled with family or community.

Arua, in proximity to the DRC & South Sudan, is a key location for assisting refugees who have fled the neighboring countries due to civil war and human rights violations. The government is beginning to allow permanent settlement in the area, and this development will also help aid the refugee children.

The village in which the development will occur, Bangua Village in Umbeko Parish, has been seeking a local school to alleviate the costs and time of traveling to classes in the larger urban area of Arua. The local community will still pay school fees; however, they will no longer be burdened with the cost and time required to travel to the schools within urban Arua. This integration with the Bangua community will help offset the cost of educating the existing program beneficiaries.

Immediate Goals:

The land is located on Muni Road, in Bangua Village - Umbeko Parish outside of Arua Uganda. 100% of our initial campaign will be allocated toward obtaining the first 1.5-acre parcel of land to initiate the school and farming project. If additional funds are raised, they will be allocated appropriately toward the farm and school.

The immediate use of the land will be used to initiate a sustainable farming project and a single block, 7 classroom community school.

The farming project will serve 3 core purposes:

1. Provide food for the existing and future beneficiaries of PCA. This will help alleviate the financial burdens of the program.

2. Generate income. Extra yields generated from the on-site farming will be sold at local markets to generate funds required to keep the program running.

3. Provide education in agriculture and skilled trades to encourage self-sustainability.

The School will serve 2 purposes:

1. Provide free education for both current and new beneficiaries of PCA.

2. Provide fee-based education to the local village of Bangua & surrounding areas.

Future/Long Term Plan
(finds not included in this campaign)

Future development goals include:

1. A Transitional Rehabilitation Center

3. A Medical Center

4. A Community & Arts Center

The images shown are of a hypothetical schematic design. These are to give an idea of programming and what the property could look like using local building vernacular and materials. The actual design will be approached through site-specific design nuances once the land is secured. Designing for the site is an important aspect of creating a successful building.
