Help Olaf the Frozen Walk!

Donation protected
A casualty of the polar vortex of 2014, an Indianapolis cat was found frozen to a water meter and one year later has overcome physical and social adversities to recently be adopted into our forever home. The cat, affectionately named Olaf, was taken to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control by a good Samaritan when he was still a kitten in mid-February 2014. He suffered frostbite to three of his four feet.

He was taken to FACE Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic to be cared for. FACE Coordinator Janet Mellinger said Olaf’s frostbite resembled a severe burn. The dead tissue eventually disconnected from the healthy tissue, and as a result he lost all or some of those three feet.

Olaf has adapted, and he manages to get around pretty well. He may not be able to jump -- but he sure can scoot and is a happy cat.  Olaf’s new space includes a ramp so he can easily slide out of his crate to move around and explore his world.  He is uncomfortable using a litter box as the “sinking” feeling causes him to be unsteady so he uses puppy pads as his bathroom.

In addition to overcoming his physical impairment, Olaf -- once feral and un-socialized -- has really warmed up to people.  While still shy, he enjoys personal attention and may one day be relaxed enough to become a therapy cat for children or veterans dealing with amputations and rehabilitation. That's really up to Olaf.

Our goal is to make Olaf as comfortable as possible.  Having 2 prosthetic back legs would allow Olaf to move around more freely.  Prosthetic limbs can cost upwards of $2000 per leg.  Our hope is to work with a prosthetic company to create custom fitted back legs that won’t involve any more surgery for Olaf.  Olaf will be a challenge due to the fact that they are detached at different places.
