Hummingbird Community Hit by Fire

Donation protected
As you may know, there have been many devastating events that have happened in the world this year. We too at Hummingbird recently have had a disastrous experience of our own, a fire in one of our family homes.

What Happened:  On November 18, 2017, around 7:00 pm Niketa Kim Lewis’ residence at Hummingbird Community had a serious fire. The same home that had a major renovation last year.  Niketa had moved in a week before the incident. Fortunately, she and Buddy (her cat friend) responded quickly and the house did not burn down. Three local fire trucks along with many volunteer firefighters spent hours controlling and putting the fire out. Niketa and Buddy were safe with the exception of Niketas’ badly sprained ankle.

They have moved temporarily into another community member’s home on the land. Her personal items and furnishings were also damaged. The structure had not yet been insured.

The firefighters created major damage to the structure in order to save the home. In addition to smoke penetrating everything inside the house, a large section of the roof had to be cut out, burnt soaked roof insulation removed, black burnt roof structure cut and discarded, portions of the ceiling ripped open, wiring cut and damaged, and burns in rugs and wood flooring occurred.

The community first and foremost attended to the emotional support, then the next day many Hummingbird Community members worked together to clean up the debris left from the fire.  Multiple truckloads of metal, wood, insulation, and garbage bags of dirty stinky gunk was hauled to the dump.  As much as cleaning and scrubbing, brushing has been done there is still smoke remaining and smoke damage that needs to be mitigated.

Niketa said, “I was emotionally stressed at first and now I’m full of gratitude and appreciation for the community and extended community for expressing their support in so many ways.  I am blessed.”

Where We Are Now:  Moving forward with the intention to have repairs completed and Niketa moved back home in a timely manner.

We have received bids for the repairs and feel confident about a local father and son team to complete everything needed professionally and in good timing.

Mario, the contractor, said, “We really care about you folks and are making this a high priority.”

What You Can Do:  Your financial contributions are needed "NOW" to help pay for all the work that needs to be completed so Niketa and Buddy can move back home before the heavy winters hit.

No matter how large or small your contribution, please know that it all helps reach our goal.  We appreciate you considering to support our cause.

To help us get the word out please share via email the GoFundMe link with your family, friends, and on your on your Facebook Timeline.

And…please keep us in your prayers for this campaign to be a success as we have you in ours.

Always with Love and Appreciation,
