Laura's Life Changing Spinal Surgeries Fund

Dear all, we have been asked by many people to add direct bank information. If you prefer to make a direct bank transfer you will find all the details at the end of the text.

Laura (Nicole) is our 12 years old daughter. She was diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis over two years ago. Laura was scheduled for Vertebral Body Tethering – an innovative surgery in England on the NHS a year ago when her thoracic curve was just over 50 degrees. This life changing pioneering spinal surgery keeps the spine flexible and corrects the curve without the need for a fusion – rigid metal rods. Unfortunately, just before the surgery we received a letter from the hospital stating that the NHS has stopped funding VBT meaning also that no surgeon could operate privately in the U.K; consequently, she will now need to have a fusion instead. We were absolutely devastated and in desperation, we started to look for alternative therapies. Over the past year Laura has had many unconventional treatments in the UK and abroad. Despite all the hard work, the curves have got worse very fast and now she has severe scoliosis with over 70 degrees in thoracic curve and over 50 degrees in lumbar curve.

It was only a few months ago that we have discovered an existence of a clinic in Germany where Laura could have her life changing surgery done. Because her scoliosis is so severe now, she needs to have at least two surgeries: Thoracic Vertebral Body Tethering and then Thoracoplasty to get rid of the hump; she might also need Lumbar Vertebral Body Tethering if lumbar curve continues to progress. Laura is a little bit shy, but a fun loving girl who is very sensitive to other people’s feelings.  She also loves to dance, swim and play the piano. Unfortunately, due to progressing scoliosis she had to put all her activities on hold.

Laura has been under a chiropractor for two years having manual spine adjustments as well as undergoing daily corrective exercises for 1 .5 hours. We have tried MRCST (Manual Reflective Concept of Scoliosis) having 112 sessions in Poland. Furthermore having Atlas Realignment  - 4 sessions in Belgium; Rolfing - 8 sessions; Theraflex - 14 sessions; and daily treatments with inversion table. Vertebral Body Tethering is her only hope to stay flexible and continue with her active hobbies in the future.

Laura is now unable to attend school, which is adding stress at a difficult time in our lives; we are now heading to Germany at the end of February for her first surgery VBT. This past two years have been incredible stressful for all of us; as parents we are heartbroken and feel guilty that we did not know a year ago, what we know today, as this would make a huge difference to the outcome and as a result she would probably not have needed more than one surgery. We are both hard working people and have been supporting our local hospice and animal shelter for years but now we are the ones who need help.

We have spent a vast amount of money on all of these treatments and have borrowed £35.000 for the pending operation, we are now in a crisis of funds after borrowing money from property, friends and family.  We need help.

Thank you so much for reading our story and please share it with others.

Update: Unfortunately, due to a recent viral infection the surgery was postponed. We have just came back from Germany. The new date is 13 March. The good news is that the Thoracoplasty may be performed at the same time as VBT. This would mean no need for an additional surgery. The deceision will be made during the VBT surgery.
