I am Mustafah Finney, a long time youth educator and community activist. I plan to change the world with your help!
This summer I've been presented with the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and head to Guatemala. There I will have the privilege to teach English to Guatemalan youth.
Earlier this year, I decided that it was important to my future growth as an educator and citizen of this planet to travel outside of the United States. I watched as those around me went on grand adventures. The stores that they told inspired to me to make this happen for myself. I set goal, made a plan and I am on the cusp of accomplishing it.
I know the more informed I am the bigger impact I can make...
There are a lot of different assumptions I think we as American people have of other countries and fear, which perpetuates our lack of knowledge. This reminds me of my own struggle as a black man in America and having to convince my fellow Americans that I am indeed a positive, intelligent, contributing member of my community.
Part of my journey in life is the pursuit of social equity and daily I strive to understand people, my students, and the communities I work in.
In this state of existence the reciprocity between cultures is immense. I am privileged to be able to live among a Guatemalan family and learn firsthand the experiences of another culture. I will be the first of close family and friends to travel internationally. What a grand opportunity to go, learn and become a sponge of knowledge, while also contributing to the local community!
With your contributions and good will from the heart I plan to travel to every nook and cranny of Guatemala; from Volcán de Pacaya, to la lago de Atitlan, to the Tikal ruins in northern Guatemala.
This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I'm asking you to support me and invest in the future. Upon my return I will probably only speak Spanish but I'll still be able to invite you all to my home in Portland, Oregon. There I will share stories with you of my adventures and the places I've been, partake in a Guatemalan feast, then serenade you with sweet Spanish nothings....
If everyone gives a little then we all get a lot, thank you and I appreciate all of you out there.
Special thanks to my spark champion Zoe Piliafas for helping me to get this campaign off the ground and motivating me to be the best human I can be. Shout-Out to my homie Scott Michaud for planting the seed and making the connections that will allow me to stay with my host family. He has supported me mentally as well as prepardness, greatly appreciate you bro.Also a sincere thanks to all those people who believe in me and support my cause but cannot support financially at this time. Your prayers and well wishes are just as good for the soul and my reserve in the social work I do.
