Dexter's First Year of Teaching

Hello everyone,
In a few weeks I will be starting my first year of teaching third grade at Piedmont Avenue Elementary in Oakland, California. I am both excited and nervous to start this challenging and rewarding experience.
Piedmont Avenue is a school of about 350 students located in North Oakland. It is a commuter elementary school, meaning most of its students come from several different low income areas in Oakland and are predominantly students of color.
Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is a fabulous district working very hard to meet the needs of its large and diverse population, but every school and every classroom still faces the challenge of buying important educational materials.
To meet the needs of my students and enrich their educational experience, I am raising money to buy important classroom materials including:
-Learning rug for community meetings, read alouds and whole class instruction
-Class sets of books (and comic books!)
-National Geographic for Kids Magazines
-Mini-Whiteboards for math instruction
-Book shelves and a couch for our reading corner
-Art supplies and many more!
The first day of school is August 21st. My goal is raise $3,000 for these materials by September 1st. Any contribution you make to helping me reach my goal is greatly appreciated and will go a long way in ensuring the students in my class, both present and future, will have a quality education. (And have tons of fun in Mr. Coleman's class!)
