HELP ME BE A BETTER TEACHER!  YOUR SMALL DONATION WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO MY STUDENTS AT GRAMERCY ARTS HIGH SCHOOL!

Dear friendzzzzzz,

This is my first attempt at the thing they call “crowd funding.”  DUN DUN DUN! I’m asking YOU for money that should already be available for teachers BUT ISN’T. WORD.  I really do need help right now in order to do right by the high school students that have been put in my charge.

My high school is in downtown Manhattan in an 8 story building.  Students come in from many different parts of the city.  The students have so much promise, but are also stuck in an educational system that does not always value that potentia.

I make a teacher’s salary, I live in NYC, and I have a lot of student loan debt that I am paying off monthly. So I don’t have the money to supply what is needed, but not provided by the school I work for.  I know what a huge difference these things would make in the learning of my students. The more I can ENGAGE them in instruction by using technology to make a topic more interesting, the BETTER they will do. Standardized tests are one barometer of how well our students are doing.  That understood, if our students can learn to think, explore and drive their own academic progress then they will breeze through the standardized tests and also become creative, successful thinkers...which is what I think our society needs right now!

Please be my partner in making my classroom more engaging, fun and effective!

Over the next 30 days, I will be posting a solicitation once or twice a day, showing reasons while this money is necessary to make my classroom an effective and fun learning environment.  Please go to the “Gofundme” link below and see if this is something you can offer your support to.

Thanks for reading this far.  You may get annoyed by my posts over the next 30 days, but honestly if you support education, then you will find my posts hopeful and important.

My needs:

1.
$1200 A Macbook Pro computer

Unfortunately our school’s computers are outdated and can’t support many of the newer applications that are in use online, so I am not able to use technology appropriately.  Should I be given an updated computer at school?  Yes!  Will I be? NO!  This is the basic 13 inch model at educational pricing.  The additional money is for added memory and taxes. I have only used Mac computers for the last 25 years.  They are very fast and very intuitive, and they are able to create great things and I know how to use them to do this.

2.
$800 An ELMO projector and tablet

This is the really exciting purchase!  Basically, this technology allows me to project anything immediately in the classroom.  A student does a great job on a problem? I slip their work under the ELMO and show the class, marking up the paper as I go on the tablet to show where the student did well.  Or, a student made a common mistake on their homework? I can slip it under the ELMO, discuss the work and show (or ideally have another student show) the corrections.  Having the tablet allows me to roam the room and even allow the students to make notes and corrections on whatever is being projected.  Many students are shy and don’t like to stand in front of the room with everyone staring. No problem, the student can interact with the whiteboard using the ELMO tablet.

3.
$375 Utility Cart

Unfortunately I do not have my own classroom and there are about 4 utility carts in the school with about 30 teachers.  Repeat, I DO NOT HAVE MY OWN CLASSROOM AND THIS IS CRAZY FRUSTRATING!  If we can’t have our own classroom because of space constraints, then we all need a utility cart.  I REALLY need one if I am going to use the ELMO technology listed above.  I need to be mobile.  Last year I hauled my bags, computer, and any other supplies with me from room to room…it caused me to not use the best materials and technology possible, to forget things for a certain class, and I was subject to not only my own technology problems, but whatever problems my colleagues were experiencing as well.

4.
$140 MS Office

Having the Office Suite of software is a must. Powerpoint presentations, data spreadsheets and analysis in Excel, and of course word processing in MSWord.

5.
$300 Money for daily supplies, art supplies, prizes for student achievement, etc.  I mostly work with low income students who are on some kind of Federal program.  Many of these students don’t have a sense of how important getting their high school diploma is to their future.  We talk about this often, but talk is cheap.  In the meantime, having incentives for the students now and then that they earn by exhibiting excellent behavior, academic skills or citizenship is a great way to reinforce good habits and show them how developing these habits will lead them to greater success in the future.

TOTAL REQUESTED:  $3415

There will be other software and supplies purchases.  Hopefully the school will come through with much of what I need in terms of basic supplies and if I have the above supplies going for me, I won’t feel bad going into my pocket for other expenses.

Thank you for any help you are able to offer.  Once again, all of the things you see above will go a LONG way in helping making the high school experience of many of my students better…more productive.  In turn, it will give them a new vision of what their future can be, rather than the very limited vision I have seen in many of the students since I arrived at Gramercy Arts High School.
