When friends and family think of Monique, many things come to mind. We recall the countless ways she has donated her time, energy, empathy and support to help those she loves, causes she feels passionate about, and to serve her community. I’m sure many of you are thinking of examples as we speak! She has been on the Board of Directors for Arc of Yates (her local county organization for the disabled) and has overseen their bowling program for many years. She organizes annual fundraisers for local charities and has been a member of the Izaak Walton League, a conservation club, for 30+ years. Those of us that know Monique have witnessed her philanthropy from serving in the Peace Corps to helping write a health column in her local newspaper. Now, it’s our turn to give back.
Last year, Monique was diagnosed with colon cancer and had surgery to remove the cancerous section of her large intestine. About a year later, it returned and she had a second operation. Now, it has metastasized to her liver and lungs.
She has not had sufficient response to traditional cancer treatment in the United States. Therefore, she is currently in Mexico receiving chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, personalized cancer vaccines and a variety of other alternative therapies. The positive side is that new strategies give hope for healing. The negative is that insurance will not cover the expense of the medical treatment. She will be in Mexico for 4-6 weeks and will need to return periodically for follow up therapy.
I’m Monique’s niece, Dana, and will begin this campaign with the initial contribution today. The treatment she is receiving is $7000.00 per week and the expected time for her stay is 4-6 weeks. Let’s start with a goal to raise one week’s worth of expense. Please join me in making a donation to help fund Monique’s cancer treatment. Contributions will go toward travel and medical expenses.
