This film follows the story of Alessa, a Latina-American young woman as she's torn between making the decision to go to an out of state college or in-state college so she can continue to help her grandmother, Yolanda, financially but before her decision is made, she disappears.
After Alessa's disappearance, Yolanda struggles to advocate for her missing granddaughter because of the language barrier that holds her back and the perceived lack of empathy for people of color within the system.
Why is this movie being made?
This film deals with the neglect that occurs when people of color go missing while simultaneously showing the dynamics of a poor Afro-Latino family in The Bronx. It was very important for me, a first-generation American to show the challenges that come with being in a country where you don't speak the language as Yolanda struggles to communicate alongside with the challenges that come with being first-generation American as Alessa juggles both school and work at a very young age.
