Five years ago Mike Seward and Sarah O'Neill said their vows, went on a honeymoon, and settled happily into married life. Soon, they announced Sarah was pregnant with their first child. They were thrilled. Sarah started preparing the nursery and attending doctors appointments and Mike made sure all was in order - including his life insurance. During a required exam the doctor discovered markers and ultimately an antibody that could later cause kidney disease. Mike was nervous but was told that he had many years until he would need dialysis.
At this point he was completely asymptomatic.
A few years passed and the family moved to a bigger home on a pretty little cul de sac in Bridgewater. They had their second child, Benjamin, and life was good.
Unfortunately, this past fall Mike's symptoms worsened, so he went for testing. He was told that the antibody was attacking his kidneys at a much more rapid rate than in previous years. He was given a diagnosis of IGA nephropathy. By October he was on dialysis. By February, he was on a transplant recipient list.
The symptoms are unbearable at times causing multiple hospitalizations. This winter he lost 4 months of work which cost the family thousands. The medical bills are mounting and the stress is beginning to take a toll. Still, this amazing couple remains hopeful while they carry on- taking great care of their young children and a home daycare.
Mike never expected at the age of 38 that he would be told he has end stage renal disease. Sarah never expected to face such dire circumstances. This young, hard working, family needs our help.
